Description: Gratzi, an elegant Italian restaurant with distinct style, was founded in downtown Ann Arbor, Mich. in December 1987. Formerly the Orpheum Theater, which screened the most popular movies of the day in the 1930s, Gratzi maintains the flair of the dramatic history still preserved today in the restaurant's elegant décor and ambience. Seated above Gratzi's bar is a grand sculpture of Orpheus himself, the great poet and musician, overlooking dining room guests, while a beautifully painted Renaissance-style mural depicting an ancient bacchanal reinforces the indulgent and purely pleasurable atmosphere. Indulge in the purely pleasurable atmosphere and savor unique flavors of regional Italian cuisine and wine.

We had dinner here on a Wednesday night in early October. We parked around the block, in a private lot that was $2 an hour. Though it was a lovely night and there was outside seating available, with heaters going, we chose to eat inside this lovely, unusual, historic restaurant. The decor is fabulous, being an old theater. The staircase to the very narrow, 2nd floor landing seating area, is very cool. The murals are gorgeous, as the bar. Wasn't impressed with the lighting fixtures, but we didn't come for that..lol.

Our waiter was exceptional: informative, polite, funny, professional, well informed, and not intrusive, but was there when we needed him. The whole staff told us hello and good-bye and to come back another time, except for the hostess. She wasn't so good...but everyone else made up for it. :)

Food-ours was excellent. We were so happy we came here on the advice of another TA member who is from Ann Arbor. I had the Penne con Pollo e Pumate – quill shaped pasta with roasted Amish chicken, sun dried tomatoes, spinach and cream-$14. You can also get a larger portion for $20. With bread, it was more than enough to eat with the smaller size. My DH had the Orecchiette alla Rustica – “little ears” with sweet Italian sausage, garlic, red pepper flakes, broccolini, radicchio, extra virgin olive oil and pecorino romano-$20-larger portion. We were happy campers after that meal!

We left room for dessert and we shared it. We ordered the
Crespelle di Cioccolato – Chocolate crepe filled with white chocolate mousse and
raspberry sauce scattered with blueberries and raspberries on the plate. Not sure if you normally get two crepes, but we did. Maybe because they were being generous? Anyway, it was also wonderful and we went to our hotel happy and more than full.

Bathrooms OK. Could have been cleaner.

With the high level of service, the excellent food, the lovely decor, the location in the middle of Main St. Ann Arbor, I give it a 5 and highly recommend it!

We will be back again someday. :)

“Authentic Italian food”
Reviewed October 9, 2011

This was our first visit to Gratzi, but we were very happy with the service and our meals. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to make some recommendations for our meal and also for our wine. My husband and I both enjoyed our meals very much and thought the wine was as good as what we had in Italy. We ate inside on the balcony, but the outside seating area looking very inviting as well.
There are a lot of restaurants to choose from in Ann Arbor, and I think Gratzi is a great choice.

“FANTASTIC”
Reviewed October 6, 2011

We ventured in after the Michigan Wolverine football game on the recommendation of friends....the atmosphere was beautiful and the food was delicious. This is a little upper scale ( $35 steak $20 pasta ), but well worth it. Everyone was dressed ( including the staff ) in their Michigan Wolverine best, so we didn't feel out of place at all in ours....on a regular night I could see no jeans or t-shirts

“Meh”
Reviewed September 27, 2011

The atmosphere seemed pretty nice, but I think the food was pretty average for the price that you pay. Pretty much kind of run of the mill italian, I've had better, I've had worse. You won't hate it, but there is a place across the street (Paulo? I think it is called) that is way better.

“Great experience at Gratzi”
Reviewed September 1, 2011

We recently had dinner here during move-in week at the college. Loved it! I am still dreaming of my dinner. Such friendly service, great waitperson, loved the ambiance and vibe. Outdoor dining looked fun, but we opted for indoors. Place was packed and the food was delicious. it was a little pricey for Ann Arbor but well worth it.
