Review of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Attraction details
Owner description: Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 4,300 square miles of Lake Huron, protecting one of America's best-preserved and nationally-significant collections of shipwrecks. Lake Huron's unpredictable weather and rocky shoals helped Thunder Bay earn the unfortunate name of "Shipwreck Alley." During the Great Lakes' 200-year shipping history, scores of vessels ended their careers on the lake floor off Alpena, Michigan. Some of the wreck sites remain largely intact while other sites are only remnants. However, many wrecks remain undiscovered... These vessels, preserved in time within the fresh, cold waters of Lake Huron, still have stories to tell of Great Lakes maritime history and commerce, from the earliest explorations to westward expansion in the 1800s and modern day trade. Through exploration, education, and research, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve bring to the American public the lore of Great Lakes maritime heritage.

“Good museum and fascinating history”

I had no idea there were so many shipwrecks on the great lakes.

Lake Huron is a particularly treacherous one. This is the place to come and learn all about it.

Well worth a visit.

“Family friendly, informative, interesting -”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

This is a great place to visit whether you are alone or with your family. We are museum spoiled living in Chicago -so we're picky. The sanctuary is very well designed, informative, and engaging. We go to Alpena annually, and make a stop every year. The maritime history in the area was surprising. I recommend a shipwreck boat tour (in season) as a partner experience to visitng the sanctuary.

There is no admission and it is open all year. Donations are accepted and I would encourage them -this place is worth it!

“Interestng”

The museum is very well kept and interesting for people of all ages - even a slide for the young. I've been to Alpena so many times and never knew this place existed and that there are so many shipwrecks in the area.

Whenever we have company we always make a trip to the Sanctuary - a GREAT place! A great place for all ages. And make sure to check out the gift shop - amazingly reasonable prices on things, especially clothing!
