The room was better than expected but there was loud music outside until midnight so not a restful night. The restaurant was most uninviting with no staff in attendance so we went out to eat.

One night in this establishment was more than enough. Perhaps the dark history of the silver mine at Cerro Rico overlooking the town influences the perspective one has (8 million people are reputed to have died there digging the silver for Spain over 300 years from the 16th century). The hotel was very tired looking and could do with a substantial make-over.

When compared to some of our other lodgings in Bolivia, this place was positively palatial. First and foremost, it really is a hotel. It has a comfortably furnished front lobby where you can sit and wait for guides and drivers. There are even a couple of PCs hooked up to the local steam-driven internet. It has tolerably competent front-desk staff, who will wake you up at unsocial hours (assuming that you can speak Spanish). It has a breakfast room that offers unlimted supplies of cheese-and-ham toasties (much appreciated by hungry teenagers about to embark on the Mines excursion) and coca-leaf tea (essential at 4060 metres altitude). In marked contrast to many other hotels in the Altiplano, copious amounts of hot water emerged from the "caliente" tap in our bathroom...and presumably filled the indoor swimming pool (which was being used for a kids' party when we thought about taking a dip). Certainly not what you would expect from the hostel-from-hell review posted earlier.

To be fair, there were curious damp patches on some of the walls in our room, the elevators were a little erratic and the whole place seemed rather gloomy, thanks to low-power lightbulbs and the absence of many other guests, but it was basically a safe, warm and clean place to stay. And in upland Bolivia, that's saying quite a lot.

To call Hotel Coloso a hotel is an insult to tourists. Hotel Coloso is in fact an incredibly badly run hostel.

Where to start, well the rooms are fairly comfortable and clean and thats where the positives end. We stayed for 2 nights and we never once saw anybody remotely senior running the hotel. It was run by 4 or 5 kids coming and going casually. There seemed to be a lot of people just wandering in, out and around the "hotel". There is no functioning restaurant so there is absolutely NO food or beverages to be had in the hotel (breakfast was supposedly included).

However the real problem was our 2nd night. The hotel becomes a nightclub. In reality the nightclub is in the basement but the level of sound shakes throught the whole hotel. We were on floor 3 and the dj might aswell have been in our room. We went to reception to complain but we gave up as we were dealing with two 17/18 year olds, one of whom didn`t even bother to take off his ipod while talking to us. To our horror, we noticed we were barricaded into the hotel too. A shutter covering the entire entrance had been pulled down and locked. For our safety apparently.

We felt very sore paying 80 dollars a night on check out for the privilage of being kept awake until 5am. 80 dollars a night probably makes this hotel the most expensive in Potosi by far. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere else. This place was one of the worst "hotels" I have ever stayed at.

  • Liked — Leaving
  • Disliked — It professes itself to be a hotel, its most definitely not.
