Owner description: Originally the home of the wealthy Délano family in the early 20th century, this impressive building was acquired by the local Municipal Authorities in 1985, and converted into a museum. Focus in two principal collections is a natural history department dedicated to Chile's native fauna and flora; and an archaeological department offering a permanent display related to the indigenous peoples of Northern Chile, the Aconcagua region and the Mapuche in the south of the country. The museum also houses one of the most important collections in the world related to Easter Island, including the only genuine Moai statue in the whole of continental Chile, outside in the museum garden. Guided tours are available in both Spanish and English.

“Small, quirky museum with all sorts of information about indigenous chile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

There was a lot here on Easter Island, for sure, but also about indigenous life in other parts of Chile. I loved it--I think it would be less accessible for people who do not read Spanish. Not everything is translated.

“Small but enough”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

Fonck Museum, the main building is closed at the moment after the 2010 earthquake, just is worth going there to see the big cracks of the building to have an idea of the power of the shake. Next to it is a small house with a permanent exposition of Easter Island. Very good, small but enough. Cheap also. Friendly staff. And outside is a real Moai, which has always lots of tourist taking pictures. all tourist coaches go there!

“Moai from Easter Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

The museum provides a good explanation and images of the Moai from Easter Island. It's a small space, so we spent 20 minutes there taking pictures.

“Small but very informative museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

We went to this museum for the same reason many others go: to see the Moai statue. It was awesome! Added benefit was the informative info about the history and people of Easter Island. English translations were a surprise and very helpful!

“A must-see place - don't miss it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2013

You could easily spend half-a-day here going through all the prehistoric and natural historic details. There are things to be enjoyed by the young and old alike. We were enticed to go there to see the Moai from the Easter island, but seeing rare artifacts from there and other places of Chile (including a well preserved young body nearly 2000 years old), made the visit well worth it.
