“Traditional and stylish”
Reviewed February 2, 2010

I was lucky enough to spend Christmas at the Palace in the old town with friends who live in Abu Dhabi - and what a fantastic hotel. The service was impeccible (the Room Service food really was fantastic). The style of the hotel was Old Arabic, with a modern twist in the colours, lots of duck egg blue walls, dark wood sofas & chairs etc. We took a suite with balconies facing the dancing fountains and the new (unopened at the time) Burj Tower. The beds were huge and really comfortable. The bathroom was one of the best I have ever used, the rain shower head with a 2nd shower on a hose - topped it for me!! . The children with us were mezmerised by the dancing fountains in the evening and they really do add something special to the hotel. The only down side is the 'sun bathing' opportunites... Sun beds were taken very early by some guests who did not come to use them until well after lunch, and there are so many skyscrapers around, you have interrupted sun shine all day as the sun goes behind the buildings - but thats down town Dubai I suppose. The location is fantastic for shopping at the new Dubai Mall - just a hop skip and jump away...Perfect! Overall my stay was fantastic.

Very nice hotel, however, they have some problems in their management. But this could be overlooked if you concentrate on the luxury of the hotel and tis location.

A lovely hotel in a wonderful location. This hotel has great views of Burj Khalifa and is a two minute walk from the Dubai Mall. However, the service let us down. My mother and sister stayed there and returned to their room at four in the afternoon to find that it had not yet been cleaned. They had left it at nine in the morning! Another issue was the smell of food that permeated the hotel and the wing they were staying in. There seemed to be a lot of people in suits around but there is a real problem with the service they provide. As a result, I would not recommend it to a friend as I have stayed in many hotels in Dubai with far superior service.

What a wonderful and great hotel....definitely one of the more memorable ones I've stayed in so far!

Positives:
- Clean, large, comfortable rooms by most standards. My room measures 51 sq m and has a partial view of the Dubai Fountain.
- Convenient, right next to Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain and various Souks and photo-worthy places. For a close up view of the Dubai Fountain antics, go to the Viewing Deck on the 4th floor (surprisingly no one else used this Deck besides us throughout our whole stay).
- Hats off to the architecture, lighting and decor as it really evokes the Middle Eastern look and feel. Hotel corridors also carry a nice sweet scent that is very soothing and calming.
- Breakfast spread is amazing. One of the biggest and most generous spread I have seen for hotels of this category. Internet access is also complimentary, a big plus for Internet junkies like us.

Negatives:
- When one pays US$400 plus a night for a room, expectations are high and first (and last) impressions always linger. Our room package includes return airport transfers. When we arrived at the Dubai airport after an overnight flight, we had to call the hotel to get the person in charge (a staff from Africa) to meet us somewhere. When we finally met him, he became defensive and claimed that he saw us walking up and down, and held up a sign with our names written in tiny font at the bottom of a list of other names (which was only readable from at say 30cm away). Wasted at least 30 min at the airport with this.
- At check in, the manager (a staff from Europe) said that the Club Lounge is permanently closed, a fact that was not accurately reflected on the hotel website. I said when making the reservation, I actually took consideration daily access to the Club Lounge (with complimentary food and beverage presentations). If I knew the Lounge was closed, I would have booked a cheaper package without these add-ons. However, as the manager was friendly and obliging throughout and we were tired, we decided to give it a rest.
- Every morning after breakfast, we were given a bill to sign, with verbal assurance from the staff that it was done for "control", and it won't be charged to our room (b/f is part of our package). Unfortunately, each of the 3 breakfast bills eventually showed up in our check out bill, and this was after the staff (from Philippines) printed out the wrong bill (from the wrong room) for me.
- When we had to hail a taxi to another place one night, we approached the concierge for help but found no one there. We went to the hotel entrance and found several staff attending to just one incoming car. Two apparently higher level managers (wearing suits) were chatting with one another in the distance. There was a growing group of at least 6-8 hotel guests/tourists waiting for taxis with no semblance of being attended to. Frustrated after waiting for 5 min, we walked to one of the managers and asked to be directed to a waiting taxi immediately.
- The Hotel website also states that there is a shutle bus from the hotel to various locations in Dubai. When I called Concierge and enquired, I was told no such shuttle exists.

The Palace Old Town Hotel has got a lot going for it. Unfortunately, the lack of service standards and inter-department coordination was very apparent, and is inexcusable since it was opened for always one year now.

I will definitely come back again, and will recommend this hotel to my friends.
Pull up your socks, guys, and don't let the hotel reputation and your guests down.

Free valet parking. Excellent food. Excellent service. Every day newspaper at the door. Room was massive. Bed was kingsize. Bathroom with rainshower. 3 lifeguards at pool. Lots of personnel. Beautiful hotel, like a fairy tale. Near the spectacular Burj Dubai (just renamed by the way). Near the dubai Mall which is the ultimate luxury mall.

Tip: do not rent a car. Taxi's are always cheaper.

The Palace is the best hotel we have ever had. By the way we have also been inside the 7 star hotel burj al arab...

Average service, actually poor in my books. The hotel itself was pretty and has excellent location but the service and staff left a lot lot lot to be desired. I complained to management on 4 occasions about several things and no real effort was made to rectify anything. No attention to detail in this place.
