“Nice change from large chain hotels”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2011

We stayed at the Orient Guest House for only one night and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The room and service were great. We stayed in one of the Mumtaz Rooms. The location and surroundings of the guest house are really nice. You get a feel of the old Dubai; very different from the high rises and artificial (but fascinating) constructions. I was surprised to see some negative remarks about the service. We found them extremely courteous and helpful and would definitely stay there again. It's very handy to have the facilities of the sister hotel nearby as well but I'd still prefer to stay at the guest house instead.

Stayed here a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. But this time ... very disappointing. In fact, we'd booked for 2 nights and stayed only 1. We'd booked online, but when we got there, apparently the online service had not notified them of our booking. Finally, after about 45 minutes of attempting to check in with someone whose English was almost impossible to hear/understand, we were shown to a tiny room - not the larger one we'd reserved. We declined the room and were treated to a refreshment in the delightful courtyard while they prepared the room we'd originally booked. Given that it was now an hour after our arrival, and 5:30pm, it was surprising (distressing) to know that they had not yet cleaned the room that had presumably been vacated at midday. Eventually, about an hour and half after our arrival, we were shown to our room. This is a great location, and if you choose to stay here, I strongly recommend you phone them direct to arrange your booking - or at least to confirm your booking. The rooms are okay. A bit claustrophobic perhaps - but you'll likely be out and about most of the time. The exterior doors to the rooms have a bolt and padlock. A little weird knowing that someone could lock us in from the outside while we were in the room. And our rooftop room, which did have excellent access to the rooftop patio, had no escape in case of fire if the door were to be locked on the outside. Perhaps if our check in had've gone smoothly, we wouldn't have noticed this little detail. We were disappointed enough with the check in service to cut our stay to one night. And when we went down to breakfast, we were really glad we did. The most basic breakfast we've ever experienced in a B&B. All especially disappointing knowing just how great it was before.

The Orient Guest House is situated in Batakiya, the oldest part of Dubai and walking distance to the museum, the creek, abra taxi boats and lots of Indian run shops of all descriptions. The building itself is attractive and set amongst other restored wind tower houses. Unfortunately the high quality restoration of this area has neglected to provide any shade and the whole complex radiates extreme heat in the summer months. The temperature was over 40 degrees when we arrived and the only area of the guest house that had air conditioning running was the manager's office. We were given two lovely very large rooms opening off the inner courtyard and furnished in Arabic style. Unfortunately even though we arrived after nine at night and the rooms had been prepaid for the four days we were staying the air conditioners had not been turned in in preparation for our arrival. The solid walls were actually hot and it took a full 24 hours to cool the room down, the first night was very uncomfortable. We woke to another hot day and breakfast was in the pleasant inner courtyard but it was impossible to sit there because of the incredible heat. The people in our party come from a hot climate and can deal with heat but this was ridiculous. An alternative for breakfast in the summer months would be for the guesthouse to provide a small table and two chairs in each room, there is ample space, and pre-ordered breakfast could be eaten in the room. This guesthouse does have the advantage of being sister hotel to the lovely Arabian Courtyard Hotel nearby, a much better option for the very hot months. The Arabian Courtyard has reasonably priced restaurants a nice pool and a spa and good service. The pub has a good choice of beers. All of these facilities are open to guests of the Orient. It has to be said that visiting Dubai at this time of year is not a good idea so if you want to use the Orient Guesthouse make sure you do it in the cooler months when it is a good economical option.

Pros:

Great breakfast
Attentive Staff
Unique place - much better than the Western 5 Star Hotels on every corner - experience the old fashion Dubai
They keep the rooms very cool which is important when it is 110 degrees out
We used the pool at the sister property which is a block away. When it is as hot and humid as Dubai that is a great perk.
It is very close to the Dubai museum and the suks

Cons:
It's a bit sleepy because it isn't always full so don't go here looking for a hopping place. It was perfect for us because we just wanted a quiet home base - so I wouldn't really call that a con.
It was hard for our taxi to find the hotel.

In general:

The UAE blocks Skype so keep that in mind if you want to Skype home.

If you are looking for an American-style, 4 or 5 star experience for comfort and service, the Orient Guest House is not for you. The mattress was semi-hard and both pillows were nearly flat , linen/bathroom supplies were replaced sporadically, it appeared as though the floors weren't swept out during our entire visit, and our room was not serviced at all on the day before our departure. I even found a pair of women's underwear in the room that belonged to a previous occupant.
On the plus side, the hotel is located in an interesting section of the city. The staff is friendly and tries hard to be helpful. Breakfast is generally good and the quiet courtyards are a nice break from the abundant traffic and noise.
Fortunately, the Arabian Courtyard Hotel down the street shares it's fitness center, pool, concierge, and travel advisor with the Orient Guest House. The capable Arabian Courtyard personnel and excellent restaurants made our visit to Dubai a happy memory.
