Two of us stayed here on my second visit to Dubai, the first having been in 2010 (see Metropolitan Palace review). We arrived at around 11am having taken the bus from Abu Dhabi, a short metro then a short taxi, so coupled with an overnight flight from Munich, we were pretty shattered!
The taxi dropped us off right at the door of the hotel and our bags were taken to reception for us. Check in took a little while since the hotel had been booked as part of a special deal, however once we got to the room we were rewarded with a 19th floor view of the Burj Khalifa and the surrounding skyscrapers along the Sheikh Zayed Road! Perfect view!
The hotel is situated in Bur Dubai, a short walk away from Al Fahidi Metro station (doable even in the 40C June heat!) This is on the Green Line, the more recent of the two lines currently in operation, however one stop further is Burjuman, the interchange with the Red Line, which will take you up to the airport one way and down past Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, amongst others to Jebel Ali, the other way. Bur Dubai can be a little seedy but it is not unsafe; there are a few well-known bars for picking up prostitutes near the metro station in the hotels on the crossroads there, not that that's my sort of thing; merely an observation and possibly a warning to those wanting to stay in the area on honeymoon or any other romantic getaway,
The room itself was spacious and immaculately clean, however one of the plugs was faulty, as I discovered when trying to charge my toothbrush! Thankfully we were only plunged into darkness for a few minutes and we didn't bother with that socket again! (For the record Dubai uses 3-pin plugs, identical to those in the UK). There was also a pump issue, meaning that cold water was very hard to obtain; this wasn't a problem when washing or showering, but trying to fill up a bottle with cold water was a bit of a nightmare. Thankfully some local shops came to my rescue,
The beds were very comfortable and we definitely needed them, especially on the first night and due to the fact that we were often out at night and sleeping in the mornings! The room service were kind enough to make up the room even at 2pm when we needed sleep until gone midday!
The swimming pool was also a nice place to be with quiet music playing in the background, however it was somewhat lacking in atmosphere. The hotel wasn't overly full in June, however, and most guests probably preferred to go out all day,
There is a sports bar on the ground floor (only visited briefly but seemed lively enough) and a Greek restaurant (would love to have tried, but we ended up eating in Dubai Mall or down the road from the hotel every night) as well as a pub (beer is very expensive in Dubai; a stark contrast to the Czech Republic where I'd been the previous week!)
Check out on the last day was also painless and a taxi arrived promptly at 6am given it was Friday morning before Ramadan, in order to take us to the bus for Abu Dhabi (no metro before around 1pm on a Friday!) whereupon our flight left at 10:10 for Manchester,
If the hotel could sort out the water and plugs issue, it would fall into the Excellent category. As it is, I rate it Very Good. Yes the location isn't overly central but a short walk or taxi (minimum fare AED10 or just short of £2 regardless of distance) will get you pretty much anywhere you need to be!
