We toured the Gold Souk with the intention of buying a Ruby/Diamond ring for the dear wife - after 5 or 6 shop calls we did a great deal at Paris Gems. Our friends who live in Dubai know their way around and even sold a gold chain for cash whilst we were busy with the main deal. The shop traders are very friendly but not too pushy and they definitely prefer CASH!!
There are countless opportunities for genuine fake watches/handbags - you name it - but buyers beware!!
A great experience to match similar episodes in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
Even if you do not buy it is worth the atmosphere!!

We visited the gold souk as we had a couple of hours before we needed to get ready for a visit to the Burj. We had already been to the diamond and gold park to buy our wedding rings but thought we should see the souk and see something a bit more 'authentic'. The Gold souk is strange because on the one hand it is not aimed at tourists, but on the other hand it is full of men wanting to sell you knock off sunglasses and handbags, which they tell you are 'master copies'. In all honesty, the quality of the handbags are really good. real leather etc, but who wants to buy a fake? I think it is illegal for them to sell knock off also as they had to keep looking out for the police. Quite comical really but it was a bit annoying as we just wanted to look around. Also if you stand outside a shop for one second too long ,then someone from the shop will come to you and start going on about how nice it is, the price etc. There aren't many places to get a drink or anything and it was so hot and dusty. we did end up buying saffron, which was really cheap, so worth the visit for that; but the professionalism of the gold and diamond park, was much better than the souk.

The visit to the gold market is included in our City Tour Package. We had a good tour of the gold market and it was a beautiful experience.

We visited the Gold Souk one evening a few weeks ago. Having read so much about it we couldn't wait to go! The place can be quite overwhelming. There's such an abundance of gold it's really amazing!

The only thing we didn't enjoy was the sellers who constantly ask you to go into their shops. While this is obviously expected in a marketplace, they were quite aggressive and annoying. Just be ready to be pounced on when you visit. Still it's a must-see!

You have to be careful where you buy because unless you know what you are buying you may be getting ripped off. I went to Aussie Mikes who are quite trustworthy and got a good deal.
Even if you are not there to buy gold it is an experience to wander the souk.
This place is not for everyone. There are lots of people trying to get you into their shops and buy their 'copy' watches/handbags/sunglasses etc. They are very pushy but thats all part of the fun. If you want something you have to barter...thats just the way things work over there. You have to be prepared to walk away even if you really want it. They will keep dropping the price.
