This restaurant was one of our favourite haunts years ago but we haven't been back for a long time... until recently. It is now a part of the Address group of hotels, but there are few signs of improvement.
One shining light in our experience was the food. Although not particularly cheap, it was very tasty. No complaints there. Reasonable value for money.
Also improved is the provision of an outside play area for children; parents can keep a watchful eye on their sprogs without having to leave their table, and they are just about far enough away that their noise doesn't disturb other diners.
The two glaring issues which spoilt our enjoyment were the service, and the stock control.
Service was friendly but appallingly slow and forgetful. Every step of the way (getting a menu, giving an order, being served food/drinks, etc) was just unbelievably, painfully slow. The table wasn't set for us at the start, we never received any bread nor any side plates, we had to ask for cutlery at least 3 times, and condiments never arrived in spite of repeated requests.
Having waited 45 minutes for food, and about 40 mins for each drink refill, we were utterly incredulous when the bill arrived within 60 seconds of requesting it!
As for the stock - well, it may be understandable that basics like ice-cream had run out since it was a public holiday weekend and the place was pretty busy (outside only). On the other hand, it seems fairly predictable that an outdoor venue will be busy during a winter holiday weekend. Some serious lessons need to be learned.
Another disappointment was the tatty state of the bathrooms - cheap plastic WC seats were broken or loose, door handles/locks loose, loo roll holders rusty and unsightly, and the whole area felt generally dirty and uncared for.
Overall, we'll probably go back another time, but I doubt we'll risk taking our visitors there in future.
