“Desert and Bedouin experience”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

We did the Heritage (not Platinum) desert dinner. We were picked up promptly on time from our hotel and the drive was comfortable to the desert. We were in the back row of the van and weren't able to hear anything the guide was saying during the drive which was a little disappointing but relatively minor. The only other complaint I would have is of the comfort of the vehicles. If you were to get a front seat in the open air 1950 land rover it would probably have been pleasant but the side benches in the back weren't nearly wide enough for me to fit on without fighting to not slip off and I am very thin. It looks like it was designed to hold 5-6 people but we had 8 people in our vehicle so my knees were banging into the person across from me who was also tall. That being said, these are really my only complaints and I would definitely recommend the tour. Driving was only 10-15 minutes at a time and less than an hour total so the discomfort wasn't a major issue. The desert is beautiful and it was nice walking around in the warm sand, seeing Oryx and other creatures. The highlight for us was the falcon demonstration. Very informative and super cool to see the bird swooping by at close range to catch a target. The dinner was excellent and plentiful, bathrooms were clean, things were done to make the experience educational and the other options included Henna, shish, a camel ride and traditional dancing. Everyone was very friendly and were pleased that we were given a complimentary bottle of sparkling cider (no alcohol served) and a chocolate camel as a gift to make our anniversary celebration special. If you have the time in Dubai, this an educational and beautiful excursion. Not the excitement of the dune bashing perhaps, but more unique. I can dune buggy in Vegas and other places if I want the adrenaline rush.

Hello Jeffrey,

Thank you for your review. It always amazes our guests on how small vehicles were in 1950 compared to today. If you compare it to a modern Defender or Range Rover, the car is almost half the size. I hate to think if we keep getting bigger, how big cars will be in 60 years from now.

We are glad that you enjoyed all other elements of the safari. Once again from us, Happy Anniversary.

Regards,

Adam McEwan

“Another Happy Customer”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

We loved it! The vintage Land Rovers are gorgeous, the dunes are a must-see at least once in your life, the falcon show was fascinating and the Bedouin-style camp was so lovely and well presented. And the food was good and plentiful. My 9 year old daughter had such a great time running up and down the dunes, riding the camels and getting the henna tattoos. My only recommendation is to wear wrap-around sunglasses and take eye drops if you wear contacts. The blowing sand did bother me a few times, but I wear hard contacts. Others seemed fine. All in all, a great family activity and well worth the money.

“Excellent first class tour”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

We took the Heritage Dinner Tour from Dubai which included a pick up from our hotel and delivery to the Dubai Nature Conservation reserve where were transferred in 1950's open Landrovers. The pickup from the hotel was on time and we were second last of the pickups, so it did not take long until we were on our way. Our driver spoke excellent English and he was passionate about his country giving us a good deal of information about Dubai and UAE.

The tour in the Landrovers through the desert was quite amazing and we were lucky enough to see much wildlife including the onyx and gazelles. It was hot dry and dusty in the vehicle, but that was expected, after all, you are in the desert, but they do supply good cold water to quench the thirst.

After the tour of the park, we had a falcon exhibition and the trainer was so knowledgeable about the sport of falcons. They are simply amazing birds. Camel rides were provided for those who wanted them and the camels and the drivers appeared very good. We chose not to as we had done it before. We arrived at the the dinner in the well set up Bedouin camp at night by headlight and the atmosphere of this was mind blowing. The dinner, cooked in quite traditional ways, was great with a variety of Arab food, tea and soft drinks. A belly dancer was also put on for entertainment and shiesha smoking and henna tattoos were also available for those who wanted to partake. We sat around for some time after the meal to just chill out and it was a beautiful experience under the desert stars.

Eventually, we sadly had to leave, but we were promptly delivered back to our hotel by around 10pm. A long tour, but well worth every cent we paid. A very good operator and highly recommended.

“Must see in Dubai”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

We had a family of four and all agree this excursion made our trip to Dubai. It got us out of the malls and into nature, we got to see beautiful sights, meet lovely people and the food was delicious. This is an I incredibly well run tour. I am not one to love tours in general but this has been one of my favorites. I loved the camel rides, walking on the beautiful sand dunes. The dinner site was very charming and you will leave stuffed. I have to say the bathrooms are spotless to my surprise at a tour destination in the middle of the desert :). My only suggestion would to bring some sunglasses or even better goggles as it can be a little breezy to avoid any sand in your eyes, it didn't bother anyone but it can happen a little while driving. Would highly recommend this tour and I wouldn't take the risk of paying less. I wouldn't want to be on a huge bus with tons others as the intimate setting is what I very much enjoyed.

Hello Tonya,

Thank you for your review and we are so happy to entertain someone who normally doesn't like tours. We designed our safari as a boutique experience for those guests who want to be away from the crowds and enjoy the serenity of the desert. We are overjoyed that we have been able to provide this for you.

“Deserves its ratings - a class of its own”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

This is not your box-standard desert safari. If you are looking for dune bashing and belly dancing, don't choose this. But if you want to avoid the mass-market, touristy excursions and want to be treated to quality service and food while having a truly memorable desert safari, then look no further. We went on a "Heritage Desert Safari" (from what we could gather, the only material difference from the much more expensive "Platinum" version was that it used open top 1950s Land Rovers rather than air conditioned Mercedes 4x4s, which to us seemed in fact to be better - more fun) with our two kids, aged 5 and12. We were picked up at our hotel by Yamen at 3:45, as advised by email earlier that day, with an air conditioned van and, after picking up three more guests at another hotel, we drove about 45' to the entrance of a private part of the desert where we transferred onto the open top Land Rovers. On the way there, Yamen provided a lot of very useful information on Dubai and the life and customs of the emirate. At the transfer point, we were joined by another 15 or so guests, so the total group was only about 20. I understand it can be twice as many when fully booked, but that this is still much smaller than other companies. Each Land Rover can take up to 6 guests - four at the back sitting on two side benches and two at the front next to the driver - but we had one to ourselves, while the tour's photographer sat in front with Yamen who was driving. We were given a scarf to wear on our heads and shown how to tie it, which was fun as well as useful, to protect from the sun and sand. Once on the Land Rovers, we drove around and saw gazelles, oryx and other animals, had a chance to get off and take photos, and after a while ended up at the private camp, where we watched a very impressive falcon display, had a chance to ride camels to our heart's content (there were six camels available throughout the evening and our kids had four gos each), our daughter had an impressive henna tattoo, and we had a high quality dinner. There was some local dancing by a female dancer, but not the touristy belly-dancing type. No band - just recorded music - but that was OK. We were shown the photos taken by the professional photographer and decided to take all of them on a CD at a reasonable cost. The camp is very well presented and has clean restrooms. After a few hours, we drove back to the transfer point on the Land Rovers and then back to the hotel in the van, arriving at about 10pm. Throughout, our guide, Yamen, was extremely helpful and flexible, which was important given that we had rain during part of the evening, something extremely rare that required rearranging some activities. Our kids loved the desert, the camel rides, the falcon display and the animal safari. We loved the non-touristy approach and the quality service. All in all, a truly memorable evening for all of us.

Hello Constantine,

Thank you for choosing the Heritage Dinner Safari. Just to explain, there are numerous differences between the Heritage and Platinum Dinner Safaris. The Platinum uses a modern Mercedes G-Wagon but dinner is in an exclusive location lit only by flame torches and antique lamps. You would also have a menu to choose your main course and your private table and private majlis is away from everyone. This is a safari for guests wanting a romantic night away from everyone. It is quite a different experience from our Heritage Dinner.

However, with kids aged 5 and 12, you made the right choice and it seems like the whole family had fun. Thank you for taking so much time to write such a detailed review.

Adam McEwan
