We visited Roberto’s on a sunny Saturday afternoon and although the restaurant was quiet it didn’t lack atmosphere. The interior is large but the clever sectioning of the space and stylish décor gives it a more boutique feel. We sat out on the terrace and with the large sun umbrellas, the vast wine list and the extensive Mediterranean style menu it provided for an environment reminiscent of the south of France or the Italian coast.
We felt the menu has something for everyone. The beef carpaccio starter was light and fresh and simply melted on the tongue, the buffalo mozzarella was equally fresh and creamy and the salad vegetables were ripe and crisp. Our main course of pasta carbonarra was well made with a rich creamy sauce that avoided feeling too heavy on the palate. The dessert of lemon tart was perfectly cooked with crisp light pastry and a tangy lemon centre BUT it was served up with a flamboyant garnish of pistachio nuts despite the menu declaring it to be nut free! Considering my partner is severely allergic to nuts, a point that we had raised with our waiter as we were ordering, this was a real concern. Suffice to say we have much less confidence in the venue now. However, we won’t let that deter us with future visits as the restaurant is top notch in every other respect but allergy sufferers need to exercise caution as currently the menu is not to be trusted.
