The Palace at One&Only Royal Mirage Dubai
Ranked #7 of 561 Hotels in Dubai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 15, 2013

This was our fifth time at the Royal Mirage The Palace. Yet again the resort exudes understated luxury, has no bling and is sheer class.

The start of the trip was however nothing short of disastrous. Our car transfer failed to show and on arriving at the Royal Mirage, Palace we were told there was no reservation in our names.

A duty manager managed on sight of the hotel booking confirmation managed to find a room (one that looked a little tired but we were thankful for the roof over our heads! The problem appeared to lie with the travel operator Destinology whose system had apparently not followed through the booking!.....easy to blame system glitches.

Anyway the next morning after breakfast we saw another manager, Alvaro Martin who took it upon himself to ensure our holiday experience would be fully restored. He managed to upgrade us to a gold club room (much better), access to gold club facilities ie FOC internet access and complimentary high tea and drinks from 6-8. A cracking bouquet of flowers was in the room on our arrival together with home made confectionery.

We questioned the integrity of the One&Only at the start but even though it was not their fault they more than went the extra mile.

The staff as ever in the Palace are the X Factor. To highlight individuals is an injustice as everyone works so hard to make your stay as good as it could be. However, given the disastrous start to our trip certain individuals stepped up to the plate and need mentioning in dispatches...Nancy,Angel and Samuel on reception, Alvaro Martin who literally rescued us from the brink, Sasi (pool attendant who kept the water coming), Islam (who kept our room immaculate) and of course two old friends who we have got to know over the last 5 years....they sum up everything that is good about the Royal Mirage- Babu and Sharma .....for their advice, first class service and taxi procurement.

How could we have doubted the Royal Mirage, Palace? ....The best kept secret in Dubai and worth every penny. Sheer class.

Room Tip: My wife had a Royal Hammam......she always has this treatment in the best spa she has ever been to.

My wife and I have had 17 perfect vacations in the palace and have already booked trip number 18 for later in the year. The management and the staff could not do anymore for you in any way.We find the all of our trips to be absolute perfection. We have now reached the stage that after this year we have no intention of taking trips anywhere else but to extend the length of our stays in the palace and when one considers we started off with one week stays and are now up to three weeks that must say something.Start the day at breakfast on to the pool, pool bar for lunch afternoon by the pool and then on to dinner at your favourite restraunts or an early night with room service every part of the day perfection. And all made that way by the care and kindness shown by the managers and the wonderful staff.I end as I began. It is perfection.

Where do I start - this hotel is absolutely amazing. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. We booked with Virgin and had a private transfer from the airport. When we arrived at The Palace, they welcome you with a 'dong' and take you into the air conditioned reception for pastries and fresh juices. We were taken to Gold Club Lounge where we were then offered another breakfast and waited for about an hour for our room. I had contacted the hotel prior to our arrival and advised them it was our anniversary. We were then taken to our room and were told it was an upgraded room.

The room: It was amazing. Beautiful sea view, huge bed, loads of space. Lots of little extras, fresh cooled water, toiletries, slippers, robes etc. Towels changed twice a day. Knowing what time your reservation was for dinner, they would come into your room and put your slippers next to your bed, fluff up your pillows, put water next to your bed and change your towels. Also, air conditioned 24 hours with your own controls.

The pool: Again, amazing! As soon as you walk towards the pool, the towel guys would put towels on beds for you and get you an iced cold glass of water, and would keep this filled up all day. The pool was lovely and refreshing and lots of seats and areas to sit and relax in the pool. Every sunbed had an umbrella which was a must in this heat. It was over 100 degrees every day but bearable because the pool was lush and also everywhere you go is air conditioned. The pool guys would also bring round fresh fruit on skewers for you and clean your sunglasses. There was also aquagym and volleyball in the pool which you could join in or if you don't fancy it then its not too loud or disruptive like some hotels.

Restaurants: We had the half board option. We had breakfast in Olives everyday which was lovely. Loads of choice. Cereals, continental breakfast, full cooked breakfast, eggs cooked anyway you like, fresh omelettes, fresh fruit, yoghurts, waffles, fresh bread... basically everything! It was all lovely as well. For lunch we tried Esplenades and had a toasted ciabatta sandwich which was lovely. They also serve fresh bread with dips too complimentary. We paid around £30 for 2 toasted sandwiches and 2 soft drinks. Another day we tried The beach bar & grill which was really nice too. Amazing views across the palm. We had a greek salad, fries and mezze to share and soft drinks. It was around £35 but loads of food and really tasty too. For dinner if you are half board then the buffets at Olives and the Rotisserie are included or if you eat at any of the other restaurants then you get 160 dirhams per person credit. The buffet at Olives was beautiful. I am vegetarian but the choice was great. Loads of salads, vegetables, fresh casseroles and cous cous etc. Breads, dips and olives. The meat and fish choice is amazing and there was also a choice at the fresh stations too. Rotisserie was nice but most dishes were meat or fish based so not good for me but still really nice. You do need to make a reservation for all of the restaurants.

Gold club: The gold club upgrade was well worth it, it costs us £99 each to upgrade from the Arabian court to the Palace in a gold club room and package. The gold club means you have a separate private entrance, your own reception and access to the gold club lounge. Its only small but a nice extra. You can have continental breakfast in there if you want somewhere a bit quieter and they have BBC news on the tv. Afternoon tea is served between 3-6pm. A nice selection of sandwiches and small rolls, scones with clotted cream and jam, amazing cakes & sweets, tea, coffee, soft drinks... Then in the evening between 6-8pm they have canapés and cocktails. There is also a fridge where you can help yourself to soft drinks 24 hrs a day. I didn't see any other rooms but apparently the gold club rooms are better in the palace.

The hotel: The hotel itself is extremely well kept and is beautiful with amazing views. The hotel is split into 3 parts - The Arabian court, The palace and Residence & spa. We only stayed in the palace but all parts look amazing. The beach is lovely and the sea is like a hot bath.

Taxi's: You can always get a taxi anywhere from the hotel. There are 2 types though - the normal Dubai taxi's and the lexus private taxi's which are a bit more expensive. Having said that, they are really cheap. A 25km journey would cost about £12. It only costs them £3 to fill up their whole petrol tanks!!

Things to do: We had booked a few things to do before we went. The first day we went to the Burj al Arab for cocktails in the skyview bar. I had booked before we went and told them it was our anniversary and my belated birthday. When we arrived, we walked around the foyer and took pictures - lovely hotel. We then went up to the Skyview bar on floor 27. We were given the best table in the bar and had amazing views over Jumeirah beach. We arrived when it was sunny so saw the sunset too. We ordered a cocktail and were given nuts and nibbles. We also ordered the mezze which was lovely. We then ordered another cocktail each. The alcoholic ones are really strong, well worth the money! We were given a free chocolate cake with a candle for my birthday and a red rose for our anniversary. As we paid on MasterCard, we got 20% off, no idea why! We then went to the gift shop and then left the hotel and walked back to the coastline so had amazing views of the burj changing colours etc.

Dolphins at Altantis: Absolutely amazing!! We arrived by taxi although the hotel do offer a free shuttle but we wouldn't have arrived in time. We had a bit of waiting around but after checking in at the main gate we were told to walk to the beach and then the beach buggy picked us up and took at the Dolphin bay. We were checked in and given wet suits/life jackets. We then watched a short presentation and got changed. You have to take everything off, hair bands, all jewellery including rings, earrings etc. We were taken out in a group of 8 and had 2 instructors. One by one we got to kiss the dolphins, cuddle them in pairs, dance with them, play games with them and lots more. Someone was taking photos and then you can buy them at the end. There was a special offer - 600 dirhams for 8 photo's and the rest on a memory stick. It worked out about £110 but worth it as you are not allowed to take any cameras in yourself so its nice to have a photo memory of the day. With the tickets you get free entry into the water park. It was huge! The locker rooms are back at the beginning so you need to get the caddy back. We ate at Shark Bites which was reasonable. Huge portions! Also, if you want to buy drinks etc then you can load up your wristbands with credit, something we were not told about so became very thirsty! Lovely lazy river with turnings to go off to the rapids, torrents etc. We also had tickets to the Lost chambers too. Amazing fish and huge water tank with divers and whales etc. Great day out and well worth the money.

Burj Khalifa: We had afternoon tea booked here - lovely food, great views as you are on the 122nd floor! I had told them it was our anniversary so we were given a chocolate cake complimentary. Amazing views and lovely food and drink. We also had tickets booked for the observation deck which was 2 floors up but we had to go back down then into the mall and access it that way. Great views again round the whole deck and open too! Being on the 124th floor we were only half way so you get an idea of how big the tallest building in the world really is! Book before you go as the tickets are double the price if you just turn up.

Dubai Mall: Over 1000 shops and if you want to shop then this is the place to go!!

Al Karama: This is the market for all your bags and watches. We bought some watches from Big Apple but had to go back (25km each way!!) as the watches weren't working. Style shop is great for your bags but make sure you knock them down on the price. Looks dodgy but they are all ok and if you say no then they leave you alone. They will take you to their secret rooms across the road if you ask - they are only aloud to sell Mulberry in the shops and everything else is in these secret rooms in the apartment blocks over the road!

The marina: We went to the marina and its just a promenade of restaurants and cafes, its a nice place to sit to watch the world go by and have a drink and a sheesha pipe.

Overall, amazing holiday to an amazing place!! We cant wait to go back and would 100% recommend this hotel and Dubai as a must place to visit.

Room Tip: Go for the gold club upgrade as its worth it!

Royal Mirage is one of those hotel enigmas.....it simply gets better each time.

Although in Dubai terms, Royal Mirage is one of the more mature locations, it still stands extremely well as a premiere property in it's own right and in any comparison to the competition. This probably stems from the original excellent low level design and first class ongoing management and attention to detail that has not faltered in the ten or more years we have visited.

The rooms are well maintained, have excellent temperature regulation and a quiet calming air and feel to them. The suites are equally well maintained and the bathroom areas have a nice logical layout about them and are well equipped. Beds are excellent and the level of housekeeping is always high and consistent. It still amazes that quality and attention to detail can be maintained but in such a short turn around time and by staff always of a cheery disposition.

It's very much a child friendly environment as well. I say child as in teenagers but whereas some top tier addresses can be a little alienating by their sheer formality and 'uber service' culture, The Palace delivers quality and consistency without elitism and without being brittle or tense. Equally it's not a poolside Kindergarten. That's a rare combination to create and sustain.

The main F&B outlets continue to be of high order and have a wide repertoire to cater for all tastes. The main outlet in Olives serves a more than adequate breakfast and evening offering and catering staff are very accommodating to special requests in the main. The Beach Grill is excellent for steaks and seafood offerings and have the royal seal of approval from my son who deems it, '"the best restaurant he ever went to". It was certainly an excellent night out.

The grounds have always been impeccably maintained and continue to be so. I think we have stayed six or seven times and never seen any drop in any of the grounds or facilities management and services. This extends to the beach front as well which is always well maintained. Hotels of profile tend to age very badly before major refurbishment works in my experience and that is especially so when budgets are stretched and occupancy lower. Not so at Royal Mirage, the normal tell tale signs of an aging property simply do not show here.....corridors and public access areas are clean and in good repair, pool side foliage is updated and replaced, on-site transportation is efficient and plentiful and there simply is none of that fading princess syndrome......Royal Mirage feels as fresh as when it first opened.

Poolside service is attentive without being hard sell. Staff are engaging and interesting and know just the correct length of time to be around and when to politely disappear. Poolside service varies widely within Dubai from the invisible to the never ending but it is just right at The Palace.

The Gold Lounge at The Palace is a very worthwhile facility and worth the small amount extra to make use of. It is a comfortable and exceptionally well managed (if a little small) area and staff are of the highest order with the ability to memorize and predict drinks orders with almost ESP like powers ...... even for a chaotic family like ours. Special thanks go to Mike Cattarperman and his team for making our family members feel very well looked after during our last visit. There is a solid WIFI service and the business PC's and printers are usable and comfortable for those choosing to use them. The food and drinks offering is high quality and consistent although one suggestion could be to include champagnes or sparkling wines to an otherwise good offering. That said, it suffers little by this omission and I do not think the Gold Lounge tries to model itself on more traditional 'business' club lounges .... and whilst an advocate of the 'club lounge' concept where I have spent way too many of my adult years, is something that works to it's advantage in this case.

The health club at The Palace is a little small but well equipped. One minor observation is that there was no rowing machine at last visit. I was told by the manager that they were expecting one last Summer so hopefully there's a shiny new Concept 2 there next time. That personal observation aside it's a nice environment.

Service levels and staff training deserve a special mention here. People in reviews tend to focus on rooms, views, cabana's, choice of soaps and general hotel content. All totally valid, but staff at The Palace are in my experience extremely well trained and responsive. There is a very clear M.O at Royal Mirage staff wise that serves them very well. there is clearly an investment in people that stems from solid management and this shines though in every case that springs to mind. It's not to say that standards in this part of the world are not high, they most certainly are, but Royal Mirage Palace tends to deploy them in a manner that's 'comfortable' not just super efficient.....the concentration is not just on endlessly wiping clean glass tables 10 times every half hour but a deeper more genuine service experience than simply keeping visibly busy.

Suggestions to anyone staying. 1. Upgrade to Gold Lounge...is a reasonable increment and super service offering. 2. Try the Beach Grill terrace, has a very solid menu but better off indoors during July month. 3. Take the RTA Water Taxi to the Creek....is an interesting route down coast to get into town rather than the normal taxi roulette down the E11.

Super hotel doing all the right things, long may it continue.

This is the 3rd visit to the one and only - the palace and have just had a fabulous week here and still one of the best in Dubai. The service was excellent both in the restaurants and poolside. it has to be kne of ghe best pools in any hotel in Dubai. We went last year and it did feel busy and service and quality of food suffered but this time it was back to the excellent standards we are used to here. We also took the courtesy boat over to the sister hotel on the palm to eat in the Zest restaurant there and glad we did.

Sure there may be a couple of hotels more luxurious now but at a price and do really need more luxury than this, I doubt it.

This the 3rd time we have stayed in this hotel, the time before being 5 or 6 years ago, and while many things are just the same as before there are a few things that for us at least are a backward step
The hotel is still very impressive, the rooms are excellent , we had a gold room, the cleanliness in and out side the hotel is very very good and the grounds and common areas are immaculate. The staff are attentive and friendly and most seem genuinely keen to help and overall the food I good

Now the things we think have changed for the worse;
the building of the Palm has essentially turned the sea front outside the hotel into a sheltered lagoon, and this now attracts locals on jet skis and wet bikes, not a problem in itself but the noise they generate is very very loud, you can't hear yourself think !, this is added to by a constant stream of helicopters going over head, and frequent light aircraft coming into land at the near by sky dive centre.
To make matters worse several large motor yachts were moored in the lagoon and were holding party's on board with extremely loud music
In fairness this situation was worse during the weekends but if you are looking for a relaxing break take your ear plugs it gets unbelievably noisy
Also there were significantly more young families at the hotel this time and this has also subtly changed the character of the place, not quite the romantic , relaxing holiday we have previously enjoyed, again more noise and less relaxing

Overall still an ok hotel, just not what it once was, or what I expect for these prices

Stayed here for a few days holiday following a conference. I stayed in a gold club room, it was great to have access to the lounge for pre dinner drinks. All the restaurants were first class and the staff were attentive and helpful. Breakfast buffet was really good, lots of choice. Nice pool and beach, it was a little noisy with planes from the skydive centre which seemed to operate non stop, but I didn't notice once I had my iPod on! All in all a great stay and I would stay there again.
