We used the tram and metro to visit the Dubai Mall. The service is reliable and efficient. We bought a return ticket and forgot to validate the ticket when we transferred from the tram to the metro. You need to validate the ticket when transferring from one to the other. There are special carriages for women and children and men can be fined if they enter these. Be prepared for a long walk from the station at the Dubai Mall to the actual Mall. At least 15 minutes along a indoor walk

The driverless fully automated metro provides nice views onto several skyscrapers. You should book the „Gold Cabin“ providing spacious leather seats (see picture). The stations are looking very modern, are clean and air conditioned. You can‘t compare the Metro with old systems like in New York City. Separate cars for women and children are also available.

Dubai Metro has expanded since i last visited. More and more lines and stations are being added every month as the city prepares for Expo20 close to the end of next year.
You can catch the metro from the airport and travel into downtown, business bay almost everywhere except Atlantis Hotel. The metro doesn't go there for some reason. Closest station is Mall of Emirates from where you can get a taxi for 35 dirhams roughly.
The journeys can be slightly cheaper by metro if you take on a prepaid loaded card and use this. There are 2 types of cards , one for normal class journey and the other for 1st class carriage. Please also note there is a carriage for women and children only, men are not allowed and will be fined if caught in there.
Short journeys may warrant a taxi if there are 4/5 of you as the price might work out the sam , you will need to do your maths, journeys between zones with the pre loaded card are 5 dirhams each. But the journey is fast/ clean and air conditioned. There is a lot of traffic in Dubai and car journeys can take longer.
