You can easily buy a ticket to use the metro. What was unusual is that they have gold member carriages similar to first class carriages. There are also carriages for women and children only I guess due to the protection of women especially in a crowded carriage. There are female staff in these carriages who will tell men who venture mistakingly into these carriages to move out. The metro is modern and easy to use there are three lines which are coloured coded and the staff are very helpful.

Were in Dubai mall. To get from here (entrance to fountains) to the metro, you have to walk for miles - so beware with young children. Also the trains were cram packed with people at 7pm even as this was rush hour. To top it all, our carriage was women only which was very difficult to see, so my husband had to go into the next carriage (a lady official who was not very nice told us this). My children were then concerned that their daddy would not get off when we did. Trying to find a taxi after getting off was difficult. Additionally if you went to the end of the line (jebel ali) there apparently would not have been any taxis available. an experience I would not like to repeat

Very efficient, cheap and reliable. Driverless trains! Get into the very front carriage and watch the trip like a driver - weird but cool!

Used the Dubai metro on my latest trip there and was impressed. Cost was very cheap (bought a day pass for 16 Dirhams or $4). It runs through major junctions in the city - was clean, efficient and cheap compared to Toronto's aging subway system. Only thing that I did not enjoy was lack of numerous passengers using deodorant - can't blame it, Dubai was super hot and humid last week!
