My husband and I had dinner for two in the Lido. The food was very average but all the serving staff, and especially our waitress Kristine, were very helpful and friendly.

Lido is the all-day dining restaurant at the QE2 in Mina Rashid. Located on the Quarter Deck of this once proud symbol of British style and luxury, its shambles of an interior ctrl-alt-deleted all the romanticism and nostalgia I had towards the QE2. In fact, it felt to me more like a cheap three-star package holiday venue than the main dining area of an iconic luxury liner.

The food was no better. Yes, the buffet offered variety but quality – absolutely not. The chef manning the live noodle station was a chatty, smiley young man who, on the strength of the noodle dish he served me, should have been handcuffed, blindfolded and taken out to the main deck and…thrown overboard. Yes, it was that bad. I tried a (very) little bit of everything (the sacrifices I make for my reviews) and there was nothing – absolutely nothing, which I would go back for.

Service, when a server eventually graced our table, was an exercise in friendly incompetence. Imagine, we’re a corporate party table of twenty in a let-the-wine-flow kind of a mood. We start by ordering a bottle each of red and white, clearly telling our waiter to replace as required. So, what does he do? He brings one bottle of red and…leaves. He doesn’t pour, just leaves it on the table and trots off to God knows where – really? Of course, two toasts later we’re ready for our next bottle. So, we actually spend much of our meal trying to get someone to serve us their cheapo Dhs 30 wine which they are selling us at Dhs 500! Our waiter finally returned (at dessert) with our bottle of white! Unforgivable.

My experience aboard the QE2 was not an entire disaster. There’s a small, old school bar just before the entrance of Lido. The bartender is a cool dude Filipino who helped us run the half-off, happy hour gauntlet right down to its limit at the stroke of 8pm. So, the bar and an after-dinner lean on the balcony of the outdoor deck helped balance out some the negativism from the Lido. But all in all, I was disappointed. My childhood images of the QE2 have been dashed forever. For some reason, Dubai’s pixie dust has not worked on this one. Consider other options.

The Arabian nights that happens here every Thursday is one of the many under-rated places in Dubai.

We were welcomed on board and were directed to the Quarter Deck where the Lido is located. I read about how the cruise liner has been refurbished to retain its originality and this is evident from the time you walk in.

The Lido itself is a sprawling dining area. I would imagine that this place would be full when the cruise was on sail. The Arabian nights are every Thursday and have a huge spread to offer. With a large selection of salads, hot and cold mezze, a saj station, Ouzi, and plenty of mains, I cannot stop raving about the quality and taste of the food here. Of course, no buffet is complete without desserts and there is again a huge variety of Arabic and other desserts included in the buffet.

I started with some salads and cold mezze. I loved the hummus and fattoush. From the hot mezze, I thoroughly enjoyed the samosas, cheese rolls, the kibbeh, and the freshly baked saj - brilliant zaatar and cheese.

In the mains, the mixed grills with garlic paste, the Ouzi, the Moroccan Spiced Beef and the Roasted Whole Chicken were excellent. From the desserts we enjoyed the Umm Ali, the Kunafa and a variety of cakes and Arabic desserts.

An excellent priced buffet with authentic taste and what I love about any good buffet like this is that the food is kept hot even hours after the buffet is opened.

The Queen Elizabeth 2’s newly launched Culinary World Cruise Series - An exquisite culinary journey at The Lido.

The QE2 is a monumental destination steeped in British heritage. With a storied history spanning 50 years, she continues her legacy as a 13 deck hotel, dining, entertainment and events destination - docked permanently at Dubai’s Mina Rashid.

Indian Gastronomy Night:  We always wanted to go to QE2 to expereince what its like to be on this great ship. We got an opportunity to try their newly launched Culinary world cruise series.  The buffet features favourite curries, Indian salads, breads, pickles and starters (including a smoking chaat station) and more. Yes yes meetha bhe tha woh bhe full desi - Gulab Jamun, Saffron Rice Kheer and Ras Malai. The most special thing about the expereince is that you get to be part of the 50 years legacy along with the authentic flavour of Indian Cuisine.

We are grateful for your kind word on our Indian World Cruise Night.

She had graced the ports of India on many of her world cruises. During her cruising days, she was hosted in over 200 ports across the world.

We now hope to celebrate this occasion with our World Cruise Series.
