Owner description: In the historic district, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai, is an affordable 10-minute traditonal wooden boat ride -- really a taxi. Take the abra from the Bastakiya side, look around the textile souk and the art galleries, and end in the gold souk. Used by 15-20 million passengers each year, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai is a memorable cruise in the water.

We visited the Gold Souk in the morning and had planned to visit the museum across the creek in the afternoon and I had read about the 1 AED fare to use the water taxi. There was no clear signage on our side of the dock and the entrance wasn't immediately obvious so we pottered up and down the waterfront for a time past the more industrial parts of the creek. Once we found the station we were shown a sign written in Arabic that depicted 1 AED and 120 AED, we could see a boat that was nearly full on the side so agreed. Once we were down on the riverside we were ushered onto an empty boat - I initially thought it was because the other boat was full but alas no! We had unwittingly agreed to go on an hours private tour for £20 ish. Whilst this was not what we initially wanted we decided to go with the flow and enjoy the scenery and it was very relaxing. The price wasn't too bad for an hour of the drivers time - although he spent all of it on his phone and steering the vessel with his foot. As a relatively experienced traveller I should of known better but we enjoyed ourselves so what the heck!

Use the water taxis (1 Dirham) to explore the docks and waterfront area. Its easy, cheap and laid-back. Used by everyone. Close to the metro/buses at Al Ghubaiba...easy to find. Access to the other side of the creek plus a glimpse into dhow wharf activity.

I took some friends to the Abra dock and we took a water taxi to the spice souk. Great experience and it's great that Dubai still has this side of it!

Agree with all the reviews that say this is the best 1 dirham you will spend in Dubai. The contrast between the metro ride to Al Ghubaiba station and the rickety old abra boat crossing of the creek could not be more marked and this all adds to the fascination. All great fun and nice that there is still a part of Dubai that clings on to tradition.

I have been to Dubai a few times and finally got to go on an Abra in October, it's a little local boat that goes across the creek and cost 1 dirham. Used by locals and ex pat workers etc .Previouly I have been hijacked and taken across by speed boat, the first time two of us somehow ended up on a huge Dhow doing a tour of the creek, (these people can be very persuasive). Make sure you get dropped off at the right place otherwise who knows what mode of transport you will end us getting across the creek. All good fun though .
