Owner description: In the historic district, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai, is an affordable 10-minute traditonal wooden boat ride -- really a taxi. Take the abra from the Bastakiya side, look around the textile souk and the art galleries, and end in the gold souk. Used by 15-20 million passengers each year, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai is a memorable cruise in the water.

very few original things left in Dubai. This is one of them. Park on the Bur Dubai side, enjoy the ride, explore the souks in Deira, come back for a late lunch or dinner on the creek. Make sure to pick one of the local restaurants. Most importantly go slow and take the pictures with your hearth

Love Bur Dubai, near airport and port.
Tip: if you're active duty Navy, regardless of nationality, check out Seafarer's Club right next to port. Free entry with CAC card, swimming pool, place to chillax, cheap liquor great food. We used their facilities, and stored our luggage while waiting on our cruise ship. Note they do close at midnight.

Bur Dubai, definitely take the water taxis to cross the creek, very inexpensive. Gold souk is magnificient, but if you're serious about buying gold (their's is 22kt) make sure you know daily market worth in gram, in Dirham, and don't pay more than 10% over market. Prices will vary, be shrewd, and walk away if their price does not meet math.
I'm a jeweler, push the I believe Kimi button on this. *Note, mostly all their jewelry is manufactured in India, so ask.
Souk shopping was great, picked up several dresses, as an example, one dress they wanted 350Dirham, I paid 120Dirham
Negociaite with a smile, and for the love of God / Allah / Whoever, don't pay for anything in any other currency than Dirham. You'll be treated like a tourist if you do. When I travel to states, I always make a point of letting them know I live in Bahrain.

Took a taxi from our hotel to the dock, wandered around the textile souk and Old Dubai and then took the abra across the creek for 1 AED each - a bargain and beautiful views from the creek to the textile souk and gold souk.

Was a bit disappointed by the textile souk...only seemed to be a couple of streets and mainly only selling pashmina. Husband's bargain of the day was a can of coke for 2 AEDs.

Did this to cross the creek. Costs 1 AED (about £0.20). Rickety wooden boats, but very traditional. Take your camera!

Great way to cross the water. Cheaper and much quicker than a taxi on the road. 1 duram gets you across. They also have tours for 120 duram that take a bit less than an hour and are a good way to see the area if you don't want to cover it on foot.
