“Home away from home in northern lebanon”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

If you are planning a visit to northern Lebanon, in the Tripoli area, a stay at the Chateau des Oliviers is a must.

The hotel is a charming villa style boutique home that is tucked away in an olive grove, just five minutes from the bustle of Tripoli.

The decor throughout the hotel is an eclectic mix of worldly furniture and art. The lobby area has a number of sitting rooms, perfect for lounging around to read a book or accessing the excellent wifi connection (a real plus since Internet access in the country is typically spotty at best).

Each room in the hotel has its own unique decor, style and name. I was on the third floor in room 22, Jasmin, and loved the seating area, balcony and modern bathroom.

The staff at the hotel goes above and beyond to tend to your every need... embodying the spirit of Lebanese culture. The staff can even arrange transport from and to the airport or tours of the local area. I had a car during my stay but other guests seemed to take advantage of the taxi service arranged by the staff.

The hotel offers a traditional and delicious Lebanese breakfast. You can pick what time you will have breakfast in the morning, a flexibility I enjoyed so I could sleep in a bit. The hotel offers dinner, for a fee, but I didn't take advantage of this service.

The hotel is managed by a wonderful family who are warm and inviting. They make you feel right at home while you are here and will often sit and spend time with you.

Chateau des Oliviers was a home away from home during my visit and I highly recommend you consider a stay here if you are visiting northern Lebanon.

This is the old residence of Mrs. Nadia ( she is 85) which was used as a hotel for VIP guests visiting north city of Lebanon : Tripoli .
It has been renovated and all rooms are furnished differently with great taste and care by the grandson : Ziad Dibo . Ask for him if you want to stay overnight .
We stayed with 5 other friend couples ( all Rotarians) and enjoyed the dinner specially catered for us . The landlord had organized also a great singer and all the ladies insisted that we dance !
The villa is surrounded by a beautiful garden where we enjoyed a well-prepared breakfast with local lebanese food .
A week-end to repeat .

Very nice Boutique Hotel suitable for couples, located in the suburbs of Tripoli (about 5 min by car) away from the traffic and pollution of the city. The rooms are renovated with nice design. The breakfast is rich and it is served. The hotel is run by a family and they are always willing to help. Its location is also near very nice villages of Koura and is about 1 hour drive to the Cedar Ski resorts. Better to rent a car while staying in this hotel to be able to visit places at night.

Room Tip: Second floor, Double room.

The rooms of this "one of a kind" hotel has been rennovated in such a comfortable and romantic style, it is running under a new very hospitable management, very calm surrounding, away from the conflict events at Tripoli and still a couple of minites away by car from the city

Tricky to write this review, as I enjoyed meeting the inimitable hostess very much, and thought the bones of the house interesting but could be tarted up. Also felt for her as pretty much wheel chair bound.. So if a future guest has the guts tell her about these reviews..

She did go out of her way to find us a good deal on a taxi to baalbeck and that we found our way to the restaurant we had dinner (we were walking).

I clearly asked for a double room and said so again upon arrival but she chose not to hear (we are a gay couple) and I didn't make a fuss.... old lady, her home etc.

I was disappointed that I had to pay VAT on the bill particularly as I'd been told the price of #130 dollars 'without surpises' and then was asked for the VAT - it is much simpler just to be upfront with this kind of thing.

Breakfast was reasonable, but this place could so easily be so much more e.g. fresh coffee rather than Nescafe, have some handmade local soaps of which Tripoli is famous (doesn't cost much). The shower fine, single bed hard, air con in room didn't work and had to open the window and was kept awake by a howling dog nearby.

I am pleased I stayed but would be unlikely to return. For a start I thought Tripoli not worth the effort (admittedly I didn't go round the ancient sites). I thoroughly enjoyed Baalbeck/Byblos and Beirut and Zahle.

For the same price I found a room at Grand Hotel Kadri in Zahle which was really nice and then Riviera Hotel in Beirut with the lovely beach club and fantastic breakfast.

Although I had a written confirmation of being charged 3 nights only (I had check-in late at night and check-out in the evening), I was requested on check-out to pay 4 full nights. Refused to read the correspondence referring to bad eyes. Combined with the statements that I should be grateful not for paying the rack rate, the taxes and for breakfast. Claimed making everything this "from her heart". Offered free fresh orange juice to make it uncomfortable to argue.

Made a round figure 100 USD out of 95 USD creating a 20 USD overcharge for 4 nights.

Hotel not maintained (the staff is only the owner Madam Nadya and 2 Ethiopian girls): in shelves and in the wardrobe there is a lot of rubbish of different character (candles, magazines, broken amenities, just rubbish). Electrical amenities in disaster: plugs not working and tending to fall from the walls (alternatively, to go inside when you try to insert something), half of the lighting lamps lacking. Table sheets dirty. Bed sheets and towels look very used. Doors very thin. In the shower, the water went only from several wholes (the others were closed presumably by dirt due to lack of maintenance) directed to nearly opposite directions.

There seems to have been no renovation for the 30 years the hotel exists.

No restaurant. No telephone in the room, to say nothing about other amenities.

Location: in the suburbs of Tripoli. Some locals claim this is even not Tripoli but Haykalieh. Taxi anyway needed.

Though, still the hotel is very beautiful. The owner Madam Nadya is very nice when not making fraud. Reservations confirmed very quickly (nevertheless, these confirmations may fail to mean anything).

I doubt there is any alternative in Tripoli.

A villa with 10 rooms overseen by a fascinating lady who designed the house.
Each room is decorated in a unique style and populate with antiques collected over her lifetime.
We stayed here for a night listening to her amazing stories. An excellent and unique hotel.
Note: The other hotels in Tripoli are considerably inferior to this one.
