“sayo river guesthouse was good but overpriced”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2009

There are now three Sayo estblishments- this one was located on river and is known as sayo river guesthouse.

I booked in advance by internet and no problems with the booking. The location on the river was great - short walk into town and near to all attractions.

I opted for a downstairs room $30 US a night- they no longer offer breakfast and I couldnt help but notice there was no decrease in tariff to offset this. Near by there are many eateries to choose from so this not a major issue.

Downstairs room very large and well decorated. Included cable TV, in room bar fridge, in room safe , fans and outside room there were chairs and table one could use.
Bathroom included bath tub. Be aware that wooden floors on room above meant all noise from upstairs easily heard downstairs ( including that early am dash to toilet by an unwell guest with all other resultant noises !!!!! and when they got up early I heard it ) i used my earplugs after that night.

No tea or coffee availble in room but one could ask for it at reception ( for $30 a night I think in room would have been preferable for most guests) Smacked of a penny pinching exercise to me.

I liked this place but also got the feeling on talking to other people I met in LP that better value could also be found at other hotels in area.

  • Liked — location near river and other attractions in LP
  • Disliked — no in room coffee and tea making available, no internet access , noise from rooms above

Beautiful quiet, location but still only a stroll from the rivers, main street shops, restaurants and night market.
Attentive staff and well-maintained rooms.
No complaints - really enjoyed our stay.
Highly recommended.

Sayo Riverside is well located on the riverfront in Luang Prabang. At $50 per night our room was overpriced (stick with the $40 rooms). Both mornings the lights in our room fused in the bathroom leaving us showering in the dark. After a long and unpleasant discussion the manager gave us a $5 per night discount.

I would pay the $13 extra to stay at nearby Lotus Villa...or go lower budget but getting better value in some of the many other guesthouses.

Sayo Riverside's management did not make you feel like a welcome guest.

With better management and some investment in the decor/facilities this could be a very good hotel.

To our regret, we ignored the reviews of others who had their reservations canceled or ignored by the Sayo. Despite emailing them directly 3 months in advance, confirming a week before arrival, and phoning them at 4:00 pm the day of arrival, by 6:30 pm they gave away our room. No attempt to find us alternate accommodation, just "go somewhere else, sorry". We were lucky to find a nicer place $10 cheaper nearby for 1 night, and then found a great new hotel, just opened, called Villa Chitdara for the next 5 nights. We'd highly recommend Villa Chitdara as a nice mid-range choice. But don't waste your time trying to make a reservation at the Sayo; it seems that they frequently turn away confirmed guests!

  • Liked — Looked good on the internet.
  • Disliked — Management are crooks; take reservations with no apparent intend\t of honouring them.

We had a large bedroom and bathroom with a marble tub and a detached showerhead. We had some lizards and flying insects that got into the room, but the mosquito net protected us from getting any bites during the night. The room had TV and A/C. the staff was nice. The room is on the Mekong and like most places in Luang Prabang is only a short walk from the main strip of restaurants and shops. There was no safe and you leave your room key at the front desk (which seemed to be true of many places we stayed in Southeast Asia). The guesthouse was fine but we decided to pay more money for the rest of our stay and switch locations.

We booked the 2 corner upstairs rooms 6 months before our trip and confirmed it again 3 days before we left to travel to Laos. Despite this, when we arrived, one of the rooms was not available (it had been let to another couple). The manager was not available as he'd gone to the airport, which was only 20 mins drive away, but he didn't show up at all. Left a young lad to deal with us and other angry clients.

We stayed 1 night as it was late and we couldn't have found other accomodation. The room was dirty and the bedlinen disgusting. The whole place, although playing the "rustic" card was in need of a damn good clean and tidy up.

We paid $60 and felt that it was probably $55 too much.

This place was a case of feeling very pleased to pick this one from the book. The location is quiet and right in front of the manificent Mekong. It is a bit far away from the centre of town but that is good exercise and it is a lovely walk past monks and wats and old houses.
Cosy, nice location and friendly enough staff.

  • Liked — Location and bath tub.
  • Disliked — No view from $20 room. But you can pay to get a view.
