“Great location, welcoming staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for 4 nights and were very happy with the accommodation. As previous reviews have stated, Evelyn was very helpful with local knowledge and the other staff, including Lia and Watt were willing to help with whatever you needed including what trips you needed to do. Watt took us to the falls and the butterfly enterprise on the way. We had a downstairs room onto the courtyard which was very spacious and had a door which opened out onto the courtyard. We were there at the right time - the weather was beautiful, so the cold was not an issue. The breakfast was very good. The alms giving opportunity is also well worth doing from downstairs at the hotel - Watt will organise this for you for a small fee. We were there with our adult children, and they had two rooms upstairs with the balcony overlooking the street on one side and another balcony on the other side overlooking the courtyard. There seemed to be good comradery amongst the staff. We loved our time in Luang Prabang.

Hello Jill C,

The title of your review summarizes two of the features that we think can really enhance our guests’ visit to Luang Prabang. Being in the heart of the Old Precinct, minutes away from spectacular temples, marvelous restaurants and cafes, and just heartbeats away from the Mekong, means our guests can readily experience all that is the best about this lovely town, virtually at their doorstep.

And we’re delighted you found the staff so welcoming. Other reviewers have said the same. But it’s really very simple. We care about what we do, and we really do want our guests to enjoy their time with us, and with Luang Prabang. We’re glad that comes across.

Regarding the alms, we have written of that in other replies, so I will just take a moment to remind readers that the fee does not go to Watt or the hotel, but to the couple who prepares and delivers the alms, fresh, in the morning. That is as it should be. Alms giving should never be a market-enterprise. Unfortunately it has, to some extent, become so, (largely up on the Main Street) which is why we ensure that we make it possible for our guests to participate in a way that is respectful of Lao tradition.

Thank you Jill! Your comments are much appreciated, and we will do our very best to continue to live up to them.

With Best Regards,
Evelyn

Luang Prabang is one of our favourite destinations in Indochina, and the Lotus Villa was a perfect place to stay there. This is not a slick resort style hotel, this is a quaint and enchanting retreat, where all the staff offer their services with gracious warmth and the environs soothe the jangled spirit with a low key, tropical charm. The rooms are clean and charming, the beds are comfortable and welcoming, the decor is rustic and enticing and the atmosphere is friendly and peaceful.

Walking to the night market, wats, Mount Phousi and many other attractions is a comfortable and safe stroll away; the breakfast is generous and everything operates with an easy going charm.

Don't come here expecting 6 star - come here to feel included in a family atmosphere and to simplify your days a little. And if you are keen to participate in the alms giving ritual at dawn, it may delight you to know that the monks pass directly in front of the Lotus Villa, permitting a few more precious moments on the pillow. The staff will also assist you in becoming involved with the ritual, and will helpfully explain this and many other subtleties and delights of day-to-day life in the beautiful Luang Prabang. We cherish this lovely place and will definitely return.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are tranquil and pleasant.

Hello “Mirella 111”,

Greetings from all of us here at Lotus Villa! And thank you so much for this post! To say that we offer our services “with gracious warmth” and that “the atmosphere is friendly and peaceful”, as well as the other comments you made, is high praise indeed.

And really, as we said to reviewer Jill C, it’s simply a matter of caring about what you do, and wanting your guests to have the best experience possible.

So, Mirella 111 , we are so very pleased that you had such a pleasant and, in essence, very Lao stay with us. That, after all, is what it’s all about…

And once again, thanks so much for writing.

With Best Regards
Evelyn

Pros: 1.Evelyn, the manager...very helpful , an English speaking Canadian so very helpful as I arrived from Cambodia sick...she knows the town well and knew a good English speaking, well educated pharmacist that fixed me up...this is a real plus to have such a manager to make referrals and other recommendations as Laos health care in General is very poor.
2.The hotel has a nice inner courtyard, a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring..or a nice place to eat their breakfast.
3. Room had great new beds and pillows and bedding...loved that.
4. Hotel is one street off busy Main Street ...just nice if you like a more local feel.
Close to both rivers...one short block down to the Mekong and two blocks the other direction to the other river,
5. well positioned within the old quarter of town to see the quaint town with ease.
6. Helpful room cleaners for extras you might need, like enough tp and water but to general housekeeping , floors always seemed a bit dusty. But
Lots of places for hanging up things in the small frangipani room we stayed in...cheapest room available.
Negatives...1. no lunch nor dinner service available. A negative especially when sick, though the nice lotus staff went to a local place and brought us some food to eat ..so nice of them to do so.
...2. Open, weird shower area..directly across from sink...all next to bed. But good closed toilet area.
3. At end of our stay we had a negative experience to get back to airport...didn't give us their lotus usual driver, but a substitute driver . This driver lied to us and charged us twice what we should have paid to ge us to the airport. The lotus staff should have kept their word to take us back to the airport as promised instead of shuffling us off to this sub driver so they could take another current guest to a waterfall for more money. We did not appreciate that.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking street best for monk viewing....ours on inside has no exterior view but extremely...

Dear ‘travelfunretired2000’,

Thank you for posting! And my apologies for the delay in responding. As readers may have noted from earlier reviews, a serious bicycle accident has prevented me from catching up with Replies, until now.

Many thanks for all the positive comments, and I do have few clarifications – and one request – on the remaining comments. Which are really important, because we learn from them, and they are also very helpful for the Trip Advisor community.

My request: you say there was a substitution and a resulting overcharge on your airport transfer. This is something I urgently need to follow up on. But I do not know who you are, so that makes tracking things down difficult. Trip Advisor rules do not allow me to post our email address, but if you research us online, our website, with the contact email address, will come up. Please, please do contact us so that I can rectify this!

Regarding the showers in the Frangipani rooms, which are behind a “step wall”, readers are advised to visit our website, which a Google search will bring up, for photos. Privacy screens are available to turn the step wall to a full wall, as per our in-room information book.

As always, if things are not quite as you would wish – please ask! We really do enjoy fulfilling our guests’ requests, and if time and space permitted, I would be delighted to talk about them. My personal favorite is the story of the hand carved hedgehog, provided on 24-hours notice. No small feat, as Laos doesn’t have hedgehogs, and the carver worked from an internet photo.

In sum – we are creative about meeting our guests’ requests!

Thank you again, ‘travelfunretired2000’, for such a detailed and helpful review. And happy travels for the future! We hope to see you again.

With Best Regards
Evelyn

We liked the location on a quiet street but not too far from everything. But the rooms were very basic for the price. No amenities, not even shampoo or kleenex. The rooms felt like a big closet, with weird fold out doors and no window. No pictures on the wall or tv and the wifi was spotty. Breakfast was ok on the chilly patio. Staff was very friendly.

Dear 'mndb',

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you and other readers may know, a bicycle accident really held up my ability to write. But at last - here I am!

I have to confess I am puzzled by your comment that the room had no amenities. All of our rooms feature hairdryers, hand-milled soap, hand made (and paraban free) shampoo, kleenex, bottled water, fresh towels and linens, silk covered decorative (and comfy!) pillows in addition to 'sleeping pillows", luggage racks, a large storage drawer (under the bed), a clothes hanging rack (suspended from the ceiling) with wooden hangars, a mini-fridge for storing drinks and snacks, water glasses, & etc.

Coffee & tea making facilities, mosquito nets, additional bedside lamps, additional chairs, a (small) writing desk, tea lights, ice, and so on, are all available on request, as per the information book on the bedside table.

I think the most important thing, for all of us who travel, is to bear in mind that if something feels lacking, to speak with the management. A good hotelier will respond immediately, and do their absolute best to meet the requests of their guests.

Thank you for writing 'mndb', and we wish you all the best, for all your travels.

With Best Regards,
Evelyn

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights. The hotel is very centrally located, nicely priced for Luang Prabang ($85/night) and the room's balcony provided a great opportunity to watch the alms ritual by the Buddhist monks closely without disturbing the religious ceremony.

Also, the hotel staff was very helpful in getting around town and organizing trips.

Our highlight in Luang Prabang was a day trip with Watt - one of the hotel staff members - to two ethnic villages in the hills. These villages are a 2 hour hike from the nearest road, don't have running water/electricity, and are not frequented by tourists often (maybe once/twice a month). Visiting the villages provided great and genuine insights into the local village life. Watt advised us to take some presents for the kids in the villages and we brought some 100 pens/paper booklets (<$15). This not only allowed us to contribute but the overwhelmingly enthusiastic reaction from the children was one of our best experiences in South East Asia so far.

Stayed here for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The monks procession can be seen every morning from the hotel balcony. The rooms were very clean with good hot showers. I would have preferred a more conventional bathroom but that is a personal choice. I loved the breakfast in the outdoor courtyard, a little chilly in the morning but refreshing and heaters were offered but unnecessary if you come from Northern Europe. I especially liked the staff at the Lotus Villa who went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. I can recommend taking the waterfall tour arranged by Mr Bounsawatt - a knowledgeable and reliable driver.

Unfortunately, it was very cold in Laos when we were there, and unfortunately, there were no sitting areas in this hotel that weren't outdoors. I understand it was subnormal weather, but eating breakfast in a cold climate outdoors was not my cup of tea. In addition, the walls are paper thin, and you could hear people talking in the adjoining rooms loud and clear. The rooms are very nice, and the staff is very accommodating. It was nothing out of the ordinary, and for the price, I did not think it was good value. I also thought the very narrow stairs going up to the rooms on the front side were not suitable for carting luggage up and down. I picked this place because they advertised the monks going by in the morning, but we learned that we could walk two blocks up to the main drag and see the monks just the same. They do come by Lotus Villa, but by then, they have gotten most of their food from the people dishing it out on the main drag. I think I would try a different place next time - and there are tons of them. Beautiful city.
