“just didn't get why this place has had so many good reviews”
Reviewed July 20, 2010

We stayed for 3 nights and paid $28 for a double room with balcony and breakfast.
We arranged pick up from the bus station and we were charged a different price to what was quoted in their email.
The room was dark and had a shared balcony which can get very noisy at night. We had A/C, TV and fridge.Sometimes there was no hot water, the sink was broken and the shower hardly had any power from the water.
There were ants everywhere.
Breakfast was not great,we would have gone elsewhere to have it if we hadnt already paid. The bread was stale, the eggs undercooked, the fruit was over ripe and the coffee was like tar.I love a strong coffee but this was too thick, you had to ask for milk as they give you the powdered creamer satchets.
There was a very pushy member of staff whom i cannot recall his name.On our first morning at breakfast we were knackered after a 15 hour bus journey from Vientiane. He proceeded to sell us tours of the city, all we wanted to do was eat our breakfast in peace.
We booked a boat trip to the Buddha Caves for the following day. However the next morning my partner wasnt well so we couldnt go.We tried to arrange it for the following day and he said we needed to pay an extra $20 as we had cancelled. We reluctantly paid but were fuming.Dont book any trips with them,it is cheaper to book them yourself down by the river for half the price.
There are plenty of nicer places to stay in the town for half the price.

Very basic guesthouse which we booked in advance based on reviews on Tripadvisor. We stayed at a double room on the first floor - very exposed to whoever was doing whatever on the backyard (cooking, laundry, ect.).
The room had a tiny shower + toilet; as hard as we tried, we could not keep the toilet dry while showering. The wooden ceiling in the shower was dripping some unidentified dark solids.
We moved the next day to a guesthouse nearby - we learned from our mistake - there is an inflation of guesthouses in Luang Prabang - there is absolutely no reason to book ahead of time - just walk around, ask to see the room, and pay the guesthouse that deserves your 20 USD.

As I have never stayed in a guesthouse during my other travels, my travelling companion suggested that we try out this place and I was very happy that I did. We had prior online booking and as our flight was delayed, we were late in reaching the guesthouse but on hand to receive us was Kurt who greeted and helped us with our baggage and see us to our room.

We had a room with one single and another double bed and it came with attached bath. The guesthouse is located within walking distance to the many attractions and the monks would walk pass the guesthouse each morning for their alms collection. The staffs, Kurt & Therone, speak English and assisted with the bookings for our sight seeing tours, bus tickets to VTE, etc.In short, they were our very own trip advisors. Once, we lost our way and Therone, in his motorcycle directed us back to the guesthouse!

I wanted to participate in alms giving to the monks and it would not be possible had it not for Kurt who willingly sacrificed his sleeping hours (he woke up before 5am) to prepare the things and assisted me with the alms giving. I have not met a kinder person.

The staffs, Kurt & Therone, are the jewels in the crown.

For US$18 per night, this place is great value. The staff are lovely and the temple views from the balcony are great. AC works well and I had no problems with the wifi for the entire 5 days we stayed.

There were some minor negatives: we had some problems with our hot water in the shower, as other reviewers have mentioned. And the basin was a bit leaky. But the staff were apologetic about this and recified the problem, and to be honest, the affordability and charmingness of the place made up for this.

The staff let us borrow two of their towels for a few days while we went trekking, and one night they supplied us with cutlery and plates when we wanted to eat food that we'd bought from the night market - they didn't mind that we were eating food at their restaurant which we'd purchased elsewhere. Another time they offered us a taste of some local Lao fruit they were cutting up and eating. It's that kind of place. Very informal, very hospitable.

I was also impressed with how they met our minibus when it arrived from Vang Vieng and were ready with a welcome sign.

The location is great, it's opposite the temple where the monks do their drumming in the afternoon, and it's around the corner from some of the bars. And only a 10 minute walk to the night markets.

Very happy.

When we can turn back the time, we would choose to be back in Luang Prabang and this Muong Lao guest house. The lovely stuff was like a family, really nice, helping people, working hard with smiling face. Very good english communication! Room was beautiful, 1st time we slept with mosquito-curtain, but it was not needed cause not many mosquitos, but we wanted to try :)
The view from room was beautiful too, nice place to sit on the balcony. Muong Lao guest house is not far by walk from important places in Luang Prabang.
Sometimes there was little problem with water, but little patience and it started working :)
There is also very good restaruant in the garden. We can recoment to everybody.

Muong Lao Guest House is a lovely little guest house with only a few very nice rooms and therefore with a very familiar atmosphere. The staff are lovely people always ready to help wherever they can. That's how we got to see the monks very early in the morning and getting a lot of information/explanation. That's also how we got to eat a real Lao breakfast even though it was not on the menu ;)) The guesthouse is just opposite the oldelst temple in Luang Prabang (with many monks), has a lovely little green garden with the restaurant. We enjoyed not being in the tourist centre of Luang Prabang but a short walk away.

Good value, easy to pay via paypal in advance. Good communication in advance and they arranged airport pickup service. Rooms are spacious but could be cleaner. Bathrooms have combined shower, toilets and sinks - so everything gets wet after a shower. The sink leaked in our bathroom so the floor was always wet anyway. The guesthouse is on the main road going into town so be warned - the road noise is loud and constant all day & all night. Be sure to drop off your key when you leave for the day - otherwise they won't clean the room for you, i.e. no toilet paper, no fresh towels, sheets, etc. We had breakfast included and it is very generous portions, coffee, eggs with cheese, ham or bacon, baguette and a plate of fresh fruit.
