“Just delightful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2013 via mobile

This was one of our stops with the group I was travelling round Indo-China with and I am so glad it was included!! The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, the rooms were spacious and clean and the food was delicious! I especially enjoyed having my breakfast on the verandah first thing in the morning. The Thongbay Guesthouse was a welcome stop for all of us to recharge our batteries and feel thoroughly pampered in between bouts of shopping and sight seeing. I would highly recommend it. Thank you!!

Cannot fault this in any way, other than its being a little out of the centre so you need a tuc-tuc or bicycle to get in and out (the hotel does provide a free minibus service at fixed times as well). That said, everything else about the Thongbay (pronounced Thing-bai) is perfect. The rooms are fashioned from bamboo and other natural materials and each has a balcony area with mats and chairs for chilling out. The gardens are absolutely beautiful with orchids, palm trees and many other beautiful plants, immaculately cared for and arranged and overlooking the river. Excellent WiFi throughout, free bicycles (a great idea here in what is a small and relatively flat town) and breakfast brought to your room every morning to eat on your balcony if you don't want to use the outdoor dining-room. Even small details like plenty of sockets in the room and in the dining-room so you can easily recharge.

The staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly - this was the last hotel we stayed in over a four-week holiday in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and it was the best (to be fair, they were all pretty good). Cannot recommend it enough.

Room Tip: Pay the few dollars extra to get a river-view room, it is really really worth it! You could spend yo...

we got in on a really late bus, but even though it was super late the staff greeted us with a smile and showed us to our room. they have a free shuttle in the morning to see the almsgiving to the monks. this was a great experience and many of the staff joined us (they said they go at least once a week). overall great place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Thongbay Guesthouse and I'm so glad we decided to stay here. We had a lovely welcome from the staff and were thrilled with our riverside bungalow. The hotel grounds are lovely and it's such a peaceful place, the free wifi is a bonus too. It's possible to walk into town (ask the staff for the short cut)but the hotel also runs a free shuttle service several times a day and they also returned us to the airport at the end of our stay. We loved the choice of breakfast items which were delivered at our chosen time each morning. We also took advantage of the laundry service which was great. On New Year's eve the staff held a party and welcomed all the guests. When we left they gave us friendship bracelets to wish us safe and healthy travels. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Thongbay Guesthouse and Luang Prabang.

We stayed in a riverview room - which we would highly recommend paying slightly more for. Gorgeous views out over the river and a good size room with everything you needed. Location is a bit out of town, however tuktuks were reasonably priced and there were free scheduled shuttles to and from town at certain times of the day. There is some noise during the night - karaoke, drums, roosters and other animals all from across the river mean that your sleep may not be quite as good as expected - earplugs deal to most of the noise though. We really enjoyed having the on-site restaurant which had excellent food, so we could choose to go into town or enjoy the view from our room. Service was good and when one of us was unwell the manager kindly gave us a pot of Laos tea and was very helpful. Would stay again.

We stayed 2 nights in a river-view bungalow and found it to be a very special place. As we had already spent some time in Luang Prabang town, we were able to just chill out for the 2 days that we spent here - lounging on our balcony and watching life on the river. It was very relaxing. The bungalow itself is very well designed so there's no insects in the room, but there is a mosquito net anyway. It's very clean and the bathroom is huge! We ate all our meals here for the 2 days and were very impressed with the food and price, although there are nicer restaurants in Luang Prabang.
This was a splurge for us for the new year as we have been travelling for a number of months. We felt it was worth the expense and actually not that much more expensive than the guesthouses we stayed in in Luang Prabang town and far superior. It'd be a shame to stay here and spend all your time sight-seeing as the best thing about the place is how relaxing it is and enjoying the view. I think it's a good idea to stay elsewhere in Luang Prabang for sightseeing and here for relaxing.
We booked a few weeks in advance and even then could only stay 2 nights instead of the 3 that we had hoped.

Room Tip: The riverview bungalows are a bit more expensive but worth it

We stayed at Thongbay in a garden view bungalow for two nights. The bungalow itself is lovely and well kept and the garden is beautiful. We loved it so much that we wanted to stay another night. Sadly, all the bungalows were full, but Thongbay put us up in the guesthouse, which is just across the road. The rooms there were superb and were very very reasonable.

Thongbay itself is a bit out of town, but this is made up for by the free shuttles to and from the centre of Luang Prabang every hour and the provision of free bicycles. The shuttles start at 8 am, but if you want to see the alms ceremony, you can always cycle. The shuttles stop at 7pm and if you are coming back later than that, a tuk tuk should cost no more than 20,000 kip.

The staff were amazing. They were very friendly and helpful.

Our only regret is not spending enough time at our bungalow, rather than in town!
