“Don't forget the bears”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014

We went in an open four wheel taxi at a cost of 200,000 kip and enjoyed the scenery - teak plantations, market gardens, wooded hills - and our transport waited for us while we we walked the waterfalls and picnicked by the swimming holes. The falls are small scale but very beautiful and by noon glorious youth is disporting itself, so go early for peace and quiet. There are plenty of food stalls by the entrance gates selling BBQ fish and pork, satay chicken, sticky rice and so forth, which can be packed for you to take in. And don't forget the bears - the Asian bear is persecuted and there is a care centre in the falls park where rescued sun and moon bears do bearish things and charm the visitor.

“Worth the trip!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014

We hired a tuk tuk to take us to the falls. We paid about $20.00. Who knows if that was a good deal or not, but the tuk tuk driver wasn't moving from that number. It was about an hour ride each way through various villiages. If we were to re-do this we would have rented a motor bike as others suggested. The entry to the falls is about 15-20,000 Kip.(if I recall correctly) Pretty cheap for a great sight.

It's a short hike to the falls(easily done in flip flops) There are several smaller falls and beautiful blue-green pools towards the bottom that you can swim in. There are rudimentary change rooms there, so bring your towel and swim suit.

We went later in the day so it was not so busy, but by then it was too cold to swim. However there were many kids swimming that didnt mind the cooler temperatures. We arrived at about 3:00 pm, so all of the bear stuff was shut down, but it looks like they did a great job with it. It is clear they care about conservation, and educating people about it. It is geared towards kids- but interesting for any age. If you want to spend a decent amount of time there I would suggest going earlier than we did as it was cool and appeared to be shutting down. When we left many of the merchants had already packed up and left.

“surprisingly good!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2014

The ride to the waterfall is a boring hour, but the waterfall is beautiful. In every trip your read about the local waterfall being wonderful, only to arrive to a trickle of water where the guide tells you how great it is in the rainy season... Well, Kuangsi is not Niagara falls but it IS a beautiful waterfall and a must see around Luang Prabang.
Definitely bring your swimsuit. It has several pools good for a dip, especially a big one with a rope for jumping in. The water was freezing cold when we arrived but couldn't resist a quick dip in the beautiful turquoise water!

Beautiful short hike to the falls where you can have a picnic and order food from local street vendors.

“Better than anticipated”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2014

This is the dry season, so I expected only a trickle of water. Not so. The primary falls are stunning and secondary falls both above and below add to the splendor. Down stream lie a series of small drops separated by placid pools, some of which are open for swimming.

Near the lower end of the river path is a bear rescue facility. The Asian black bears are fun to watch.

The biggest downside is a rather dangerous river path. It has seen very few improvements and can be very slippery, even when dry. Tree roots and steep spots make footing uncertain.
