a great little hike up to the top but realized once there that it was a great idea for 100 other people. the view of the sunset was spectacular but don't expect it to be intimate. worth staying a bit longer after the sun drops from the horizon and most of the crowd makes the trek back down. the sky is still beautiful!

About 350 steps up. Best to go a different way down then took up---different pieces of statuary on the different routes.

Do give yourself plenty of time to climb to the summit of Mount Phousi to enjoy the sun dipping behind the mountains to the west.
We had underestimated the distance from our hotel to the steps that wound their way up the peak, and found ourselves sprinting up with ten minutes to spare. We arrived at the top dripping and breathless, only to find that were were already hundreds of people who had all bagged the best vantage point!
It didn't really matter as it was possible to get a 100 degree panoramic view in all directions from various spots.
We took a far more leisurely stroll down via an entirely different route and soon found ourselves back in the lanes of Luang Prabang.
A beautiful spot and if we ever return to LP will try to visit at sunrise maybe?

there's more to this place- onnce you climb the 300+ steps the view is outstanding (and release caged sparrows which is what a few people seemed to be doing). The way down is through a different path through what seemed to be a monastery

Definately worth the climb, but tread carefully. The view is amazing, but take along your own drink it is quite a climb. You will see the russian guns left from darker days, but a reminder of the conflict in this part of the world, Definately take walk down the other side as there are some great statues.
