Wonderful place to unwind and watch the world go by. Luang Prabang is a wonderful town for just chilling and enjoying a slower pace of life. The hotel is perfectly situated by the river. The staff are so helpful. The breakfast each morning is freshly cooked. Excellent.

Room Tip: An upstairs room in the main hotel above the restaurant. Lovely large room with views over the river...

I disagree with others who have posted average reviews. This small hotel is run by a charming owner who is extraordinarily attentive to your every need, his staff are equally in tune with the needs of the guest. The included breakfast is as good as any I've had in Laos & more than one expects for an included breakfast. The rooms are large and very comfortable. If only I could find more places like this to stay in my travels.

It is really a charming spot location, central but secluded. I'll be staying there the next time I'm in LP. Congratulations on running a great show.

I have stayed here seven times over as many years. Ivan Scholte, the owner, is a consummate hotel proprietor and has a great eye for decoration of the common parts and the bedrooms. He has a wonderful, caring and helpful staff. There may be more luxurious hotels in Luang Prabang (at a cost), but I would rate the Apsara as excellent value for money in a town which is becoming quite expensive (much more expensive than Siem Reap, for example). It does a simple but tasty breakfast. Do try the Masala Omelette. After so many indifferent dining experience in Luang Prabang, this time we dined every evening for a week at the Apsara. It's restaurant is consistent and provides tasty lunches and dinners: try the lemongrass beef, the roasted aubergine salad and the buffalo sausages. It is conveniently located on the Name Khan river, and close to everything. We have already planned another 10 days at the Apsara in July.

Room Tip: We like room 7 - a short hop to breakfast and dinner, and a little terrace to watch the world go by.

The Apsara is a reasonably priced hotel that gives 5 star service in every way. Perhaps it is because the owner lives at the hotel. We often have found, during our 4-month yearly world travels, that owner run hotels can be the best – and this is one. At the Apsara, it feels as if everything has been carefully considered. Every staff member from the ladies who clean the rooms to the restaurant and hotel manager is friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and a pleasure to be around. Everyone seems to be delighted that you are visiting with them and acts as if he or she wants to do anything that will make your stay better. Rooms are specious and high ceilinged with a feeling of colonial Lao. The rooms have every amenity: The beds are incredibly comfortable, they provide as much free water as you want, the balconies overlook the river and the bustling street, which quiets down by 10 PM. If there is any problem the hotel management is quick to respond to it and do everything within their powers to resolve it. Two we stayed in had large comfortable bathtubs and separate showers both of which had ample hot water all day. If that weren’t enough, the restaurant is outstanding – one of the two best in town and as a guest you receive free breakfast with your room! Breakfast includes fresh orange juice, a changing array of fresh fruit, fresh baked French bread toast, and eggs or omelets any way you want them with ham or bacon! Not only that but, and for some this may be the icing on the cake…you can have your free breakfast any time until lunch!!!!! The hotel is right in town and a 5-minute walk from one of the most important temples and a leisurely 10-minute walk from the museum and the night market. What more could you ask for of a hotel?

Room Tip: River View, 2nd Floor

We spent three nights at the Aspara and it was fine but not impressive. We had a street level room fronting to the river which was nice and made for a great view at breakfast. The locals use the park across the street for parties which is lovely and lots of fun, but unfortunately there was one that went for about 14 hours w/karaoke at decibel levels that quite literally shook the furniture. While it was not in the hotel's control to do anything about the party, they seemed at a complete loss to deal with complaints from guests who literally couldn't hear themselves think let alone sleep. It wasn't until after 10pm that they offered to move us to their sister property across the river and by then it was useless. All of that said, the staff was attentive and polite, but we didn't get the sense that things were particularly organized. For instance, we had requested and confirmed a late check-out but then on the day we were leaving were told it was no longer ok. It all worked out in the end and I wouldn't say people shouldn't stay here, we just seemed to hit it at an off moment.

I was upstairs in the annexe down the road. Room was fine mosquitos were around so I didn't open the windows much.I bought direct for about 75 used which was ok.Tom the English intern was very helpful. Breakfast was simple but good .there seem to be a lot of boutique hotels now all charging much more than the similarly located more simple hotels Apsara is cheaper than many of the former .No problems with bed . Owned I understand by an English man who was away.Overall a good choice.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are quieter but river hidden by trees

A couple of friends and I have just returned from Christmas in Luang Prabang. Our stay was at The Apsara. This is my second time to LP but my first at Apsara; and I am very happy to say my friends' first visit to LP and Apsara was very well received. It's almost February 2013 and I'm still telling all my other friends to go to LP and stay at Apsara. Every morning you're faced with children rushing off to school and young monks on their way to temple along the Nam Khan river, and farmers tending to their small plots on the opposite banks of the Nam Khan. The temples and streets, filled with old colonial-style architecture and smiling locals, languidly come to live. Life is unhurried it appears, it seems to simply unfold throughout the day as it should. The weather is absolutely glorious, sunny days and cool nites, dry and mosquito-free. Even though LP is very walkable, Apsara's location means you have many little side streets and meandering roads to choose from to traverse. Walk the little side streets at different times of the day and you'll see how the locals live, playing cards on the tiny steps in the evening, deft hands making home-made noodles for lunch, roosters in their hutch, compacted rice cakes dry-baking in the sun. A little tired by 2pm…simply talk a leisurely stroll back for a nap. The upstairs room we had was beautifully appointed and unpretentious, although we were too busy to have used the bath tub (which stands in the room itself but is cleverly and tastefully hidden behind a screen). And Apsara's brilliant 'no TV' means your hurried pace of life is forced into the LP rhythm of slow lazy slumberous days. Service was good, espressos at 1.30am...checked; tuk-tuk to Bear Sanctuary at 10.30am sharp...checked. I wish you a very pleasant visit to LP and the Apsara. I'll be back in 2014! I love waiting for my flight to arrive at the tarmac of the little humble airport (it’s very similar to waiting for your bus in a city…seriously). Warmly, Beatrice, Hana and Syn (Malaysia)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The first and still one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in Luang Prabang, the Apsara was originally a rice warehouse situated on the banks of the Nam Khan [The quieter side of town]. The Apsara is also right in the heart of the heritage village, making it the perfect place to stay. From the comfort of its large, airy bedrooms, rated by the Washington Post as "an inch beyond decadence", it's easy to explore temples and the lanes of Luang Prabang. After which you can relax on the river terrace and enjoy the spectacular views and a refreshing Beer Laos. But that's not all, our restaurant is well known for having one of the most interesting menus in town as well as a superb wine list and the driest martinis in Laos. As Hip Hotels said "Both the restaurant and bar reflect a refined sense of taste" and who are we to argue with that. ... more   less
