Belmond La Residence Phou Vao
Ranked #4 of 70 Hotels in Luang Prabang
Certificate of Excellence

We just spent 3nights at La Residence Phou Vao and regretted having to leave. The service, food and grounds are outstanding. Chef "Wally" is excellent, engages with his patrons and is very helpful with dinner selections. The rooms are very spacious and very clean. It has a wonderful spa with two excellent therapists. And finally, if you want to spend a little money treat yourself to the 500 Candle Dinner...nothing like it. And, if you are concerned about sanitary conditions everything they do here is of the highest standard.

As part of our tour in Indochina we choose for Orient express in both Laos (La residence Phou Vao) and Cambodia (La residence d'Angkor). We spent 3 nights in early January in the wonderful city of Luang Prabang. Our first impressions were relatively disappointing. The property is far away from a luxury retreat as advertised. Prices are at the same level of high class resorts but La residence Phou Vao cannot justify any of this. The rooms are small and not very cosy, the beds are very hard, the swimming pool does not look as appealing as it does on pictures, the garden could be maintained with more care. The spa was awarded best Asian spa 2012 by Conde Nast. While the spa in itself was ok, I cannot understand that this spa was received such an award, especially given its basic looks and facilities. There is no gym I the resort. The sole restaurant does offer quality food and the breakfast is ok. The main problem of the hotel are the prices. To give an example: calvados is sold at 18USD. In its sister hotel La residence the same calvados is priced 6 USD on the menu of the bar. A mediocre glass of Australian Sauvignon is sold at USD 18. This is very problematic especially since La residence Angkor delivers what it advertises. The private tours of the hotel are far too expensive and the bikes are in questionable condition. Orient express should definitely set some things straight in Luang Prabang and invite the local management to Angkor. Nonetheless we had a wonderful time in Luang Prabang city, a magnificent unexplored gem in Asia.

La Residence was terrific, sitting above the city. The room had an open flow with a large private outdoor patio, complete with two lounges, overlooking the town.
The pool area was gorgeous, sitting on the edge of the mountain. A few steps above the pool was the open restaurant that served a lovely breakfast.
The bar area was a nice place to relax at the end of the night when we came back from eating in town.
The hotel arranged our trip to a rice plantation--very fun--and we rode bikes into town for dinner one night. Another great evening.
We got up before dawn to see the monks walk. The hotel provided a car, rug to kneel on and the cooked rice to give the monks (for a small fee.) An unforgettable event.
Great hotel

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the upper rooms (two-story building) at the back of the property. Our unobstruc...

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights, and were charmed by the beautiful setting, nice lounge and swimming pool area, our lovely room with balcony, and by a very friendly and accomodating staff. The breakfast was something we were looking forward to every morning. The food selection was excellent - we usually started with a local noodle soup which was very good. At the time we were there - the Hmong people celebrated the New Year, and were were admired their traditional folk costume during breakfast as one of the breakfast staff was dressed in it.
The hotel is perfectly located, close to the city, but far enough to avoid city rush. There is a hotel shuttle bus service which we used every day. If we go back to Luang Prabang (and we are thinking of it), we will defintiely stay in this hotel again.

Room Tip: A room with balcony facing a swiming pool is a nice choice.

Beautiful hotel with great service. Nice touches like the fireplace outside in the evenings. Room was luxurious with a separate lounge, large balcony with day beds, big bathroom, very comfy bed. The staff (John, Julia and others) were also very helpful at arranging trips and booking restaurants. The concierge was very attentive to arrange transportation, also the complimentary shuttle was great and would pick you up from town if you called.

Take the hotel riverboat for a trip up the Mekong for a day, beautiful boat with daybeds, hot tea, and a personal guide.

Remember to bring warm clothing in December!

Good value for money, staff very pleasant, Julia the front manager went out of her way to help and to accommodate our needs, my wife is very sensitive to light at night so Julia arranged blackout curtains for our room which worked a treat. She was also very helpful in recommending and booking top eating spots.

I had a marvellous stay at La Residence Phou Vao Resort. It's wonderful interiors, fantastic services and excellent dinning too. My room was the pool over look, surrounding by trees and natural atmosphere. I had a fantastic relaxing time during my stay, it was amazing get away from my work and my busy life style in Bangkok. The team here are wonderful, professional and lovely. I also had the most relaxing spa here and i think this is absolutely the best spa in Luang Prabang, i was actually in love with their spa so much i had it two days in the row! I would like to say " A big thank you to La Residence Phou Vao team who made my stay became the most memorable trip. I will certainly visit La Residence Phou Vao again.
