“Luxury at it's best”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

We have just returned from a spa day at this beautiful hotel, and from the very moment they collected us from our hotel it was wonderful. All of the staff were friendly, happy and welcoming. Lunch by the infinity pool overlooking the Loas mountains was very special. We enjoyed a selection of small bites and salad, all of which were well prepared and tasty.

The Spa area was gorgeous and again the staff were gracious and friendly. We were lucky enough to have the spa area pool all to ourselves making this an even more luxurious experience.

It was my husbands birthday and they kindly send down a desert and candle! A lovely touch to end a lovely day.

I spent 3 nights at this lovely property with my daughter when we were traveling through the region. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience from the moment we were greeted at the airport until we sadly said our good-byes. I was first surprised by how quiet and peaceful the hotel was. It was "rainy" season though the rains only lasted about 2 minutes a day! Only a few other rooms were booked during our stay. I'm sure this helped with the level of attentiveness from the staff but I also expect that the hotel provides exceptional service even when fully booked. We were upgraded to a mountain view suite which was lovely...the scenery breathtaking. The rooms were comfortable, in excellent condition and were very well appointed.

I relied on the hotel staff to arrange our tours. The Baci ceremony was very special and well worth doing. We also rose early for the alms giving with the monks. We visited the waterfalls and several artisan villages. The most memorable day of our stay was our trip to the ancient Buddha caves which was arranged through the hotel. Their boat is lovely and our private trip on the Mekong will remain in my memories forever. It was truly a special experience. We also used the hotel service to tour lovely Luang Prubang including the temples, museums, morning markets and night markets. To say the staff was accommodating is an understatement!

The spa was also wonderful and worth all of the accolades as the Best Spa in Asia. We both had the signature package which was a great way to relax after our long journey to Laos.

We also enjoyed our breakfasts, pool side lunch and bar service. One evening we were treated to a special meal in their Phou Savanh Restaurant. The local cuisine and wines that were offered were exceptional.

My stay at La Residence Phou Vao was so amazing. I will use it as the bar by which to measure all others. If you're looking for a unique, fascinating city and an equally tranquil, charming hotel, do yourself a favor and visit this property in July. (Don't believe the rainy season hype!) The only way this trip could have been better is if my husband had been with me instead of my teenage daughter :-)

“I just loved this place! Firstly, it is in a great locations: about a mile from the city centre, so close enough to check out the UNECO-protected destination, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle. Secondly, the setting. There are three acres of tropical garden surrounding the hotel - so relaxing. And the views - wow. The hotel sits on top of a hill so you overlook the city from almost everywhere. Thirdly, the hotel itself. Interiors are simple yet stylish, a mix of French colonial, traditional Laotian and contemporary design. There is plenty to keep you occupied if you decide to spend a day staying put - I highly recommend the cookery classes.”

Spent three nights at this lovely, peaceful property. The service was great and the room was comfy with great beds and ice cold AC. Lovely view of the gardens and town from our balcony. Breakfast was great, spa service was wonderful. We had one dinner which was quite tasty but pricey as were drinks in the bar. It was great to be 'away' from the main town which was but a two minute shuttle ride. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Loved the view from room 205

Located on a hill and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of town, this property oozes charm and elegance of the Old World. The collections of villas are well placed from each other, and beautifully set bordering a sweet cosy garden, and lots of lovely old trees. The heart of the property is around the pool and the great restaurant. The F&B manager, Patty shares her travels stories as well as her menu recommendations to the International, local and Turkish dishes lovely created by their Turkish chef. The spa is delightful and is a real treat after a day of sightseeing. The whole property is incredibly well managed by John, the General Manager and his team. My one comment would be that being an 8 year old property...the bedrooms are in need of "updating" for what would be otherwise a perfect stay.

From the time you land to the time you leave, everything is pure luxury. The town of Luang Prabang is truly a gem within South East Asia and this hotel more than exceeds every expectation in terms of hospitality. We opted for one of their Garden View Phou Suites and they were so spacious and opulent. The gardens of this hotel deserve special mention. They are lush well maintained and a wonder to the eye.
The Spa was great and we especially enjoyed the pool/social area around the Spa. The main social area is also wonderful and the views breathtaking.
It is a short 5 min ride into central Luang Prabang, however there is always a hotel tuk tuk on hand and in the evening they have a very efficient shuttle service. To be just outside the historical district, in our opinion, is a blessing.
The staff were excellent and always around to assist in a courteous and professional manner. Special “shout out” to Pattie (Food and Beverage Manager – pure genius and the kind of person you long to meet on your travels).
Everything was sensational. John and his team make this hotel a “must stay” for guests wishing to experience the gems of SE Asia.

My wife and I have just spent two nights and three days indulging in the tranquillity of La Residence Phou Vao. We read-up on the town and hotel in particular before booking our holiday, so our expectations were high. We weren't in anyway disappointed and our leaving was tinged with not a little regret that we hadn't stayed longer.

This is an incredible hotel, full of old world character and oriental charm. It's also part of the Oriental Express Group, something we hadn't really appreciated before our stay but will definitely look out for in the future. The staff, led graciously by the GM, John Dopéré, were attentive and extremely helpful at all times without being intrusive. The room was comfortable and very well appointed whilst maintaining it's charm and outstanding balcony view. Our room overlooked the infinity pool onto the lush vegetation and the mountains beyond. The food is wonderful, the only issue is having to decide from the fantastic menus. The cocktail menu is worth a visit too.

This time of the year is considered "low season", which meant that we had much of the residence to ourselves. I would say this was a gift for us. The weather was great and tranquility only enhanced. Everything we read said the hotel was "a little way of of town", in a positive way, implying that you were away from the hustle and bustle of the town. It is just outside town but actually only minutes walk and with transport readily available whenever you need it. Ideal location..
