“A visit to Luang Prabang”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

La Residence Phou Vao is located just outside Luang Prabang with a view of the mountains and the town below. The grounds of the hotel are very nice and the extensive breakfast served inside or outside is quite good. It it is cool in the morning so small wood wires are started in outdoor containers to keep the chill off. We used the spa which is very professional and efficient with a lovely setting in separate huts. The whole staff is well trained and very helpful. We arranged a one day tour on the Mekong which was a real treat with lunch served on the beach. Shuttles are available into the town since walking is doable but a hike.

Room Tip: Reserve a room with a view of the mountains and try the Mekong cruise. The monk walk at 6am is wort...

This resort is nicely situated on a hill a short distance from the main part of town. The room was very nicely appointed and very comfortable. The staff was very nice and helpful. There was plenty of shuttle service to and from town if you don't want to walk. Wifi in the room worked well.

We had dinner in the hotel's restaurant one night. While the food was decent enough, it was very overpriced. It was our first night there and were were not sure how decent the restaurants in town would be. There are plenty of decent places to eat in town ... we highly recommended L'elephant.

This charming and smart hotel perched on the hill overlooking beautiful Luang Prabang is an ideal setting to take in this part of the world. It is not cheap considering what you might get for the same price in neighboring Thailand but is one of the best high-end options in Laos. Fantastic staff and management went out of our way to make sure we were comfortable. The hotel's driver in particular was more than happy to suggest side trips and point out sights when he dropped us into town. The "infinity" pool, lush surrounds and impressive breakfasts were the highlight. Extremely quiet but so are most places in Luang Prabang. Ideal for couples.

Last month we stayed at La Residence for four nights, it was the first time for us to stay in an Orient Express hotel and we were not disappointed. The hotel is in a superb position overlooking the city. Staff were extremely helpful and nothing too much trouble, the manager even helped me with my photos not having brought an IPad camera card reader with me.

At this time of year it's pretty chilly in the mornings and evenings but little braziers are provided next to your dining table and fan heaters at breakfast, what more could you ask for.

All staff we came across wanted to practise their English with friendly chats and all willing to give you good service. Having crossed the river border from Thailand and travelling down the Mekong this hotel was a wonderful place as a base to relax after days exploring the surrounding areas..

Guests do have to be aware that the surrounding area can be a bit noisy during wedding season from venues lower down the hill, but you have to be pretty small minded to complain. This is a great hotel I would recommend a stay.

From arrival to departure our stay here was first class all the way. A perfect place to leave all of your worries behind and relax and enjoy the laid back way of life in Luang Prabang. Our room was spacious with a outdoor balcony to lounge in comfort and well serviced by the staff who always had a welcoming "Sabaidee" and smile. We had dinner in the restaurant which was excellent with a good mix of local/international cuisine. The hotel is a 25 minute walk in to the main town, but cycle hire and shuttle bus service are complimentary to ensure easy access if you really want to leave the hotel. Two swimming pools and our relaxing holiday was made complete by a massage in the superb spa. Our first trip to Laos and the place is so friendly even the Mosquitos don't bite.
Don't leave this off any Asia itinerary or you will miss a treat.

An Orient Express Property, on a hill overlooking the town. The paramount of luxury and chic is in line with high prices. The lavish rooms and bathrooms are large. Incredible good service, I felt like people were thinking about what I could ask for before I could even think of it. The beautiful gardens include a very special pool, more like a pond in the jungle. The spa is a must, with beautiful Lao pavilions and amazing treatments. The restaurant is exceptional. A shuttle to the town is available on demand except at night. Activities are unique and private. I recommend the sunset cruise on the Mekong, precious.
