“Brilliant decoration”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

This is one of the most attractive temples in Lunag Prabang. The exterior is covered with brilliant black, red and gold stencil work which they were redoing when we were there to make sure the temple looked at its best for the New Year celebrations.

Very elaborate wat, with golden ornaments and carvings. Worth visiting and exploring the intricacies of the detailed work.

“so much gold and red”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

If you are lucky and it is open, enjoy this beautiful temple. The ceiling is so elaborate. The sim is the highlight, with its five-tiered roof extending protection over the spectacular gilded bas relief depicting scenes from the Ramayana and the life story of the Buddha.

“Dazzling Artwork Shows Devotion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

We visited three Wats (Buddhist temples) while in Luang Prabang. The first was Wat Mai. My map shows it to be on Sisavangvong Road, and if I have posted this to the wrong Wat Mai in Luang Prabang, (on Tripadvisor, it shows up with a different street name), I apologize.

What we saw was a structure that had beautiful, gold-filigreed, decorated, columns of exquisite artwork, along with carved wall panels depicting various images, also covered in what I assume is gold (probably gold leaf or paint). Inside the somewhat darkened interiors, there also were beautifully decorated columns and golden images of Buddha, in different sizes, along with other decorations, that almost glow in that darkened space. The overall experience, to me, is one showing intense devotion of artists to the images of their religion.

Outside the main building, there also was a beautifully decorated boat, long and slender, in an open structure with roofing that protected it from sun and rain. This boat may be used in royal occasions. There also is a stupa, somewhat weathered and I don't recall for what dignitary it was built to preserve a relic,

“Very rich”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

The whole Temple is decorated with golden leaf on black and dark red laquer.Inside there is a sitting statue of Buddah and surrounded by many other smaller statues devoted from people. There is also a emerald statue of Buddah but the original is said to be in the Thailand Palace.
