“Excellent hidden falls walk”

Owner description: Directions; from the end of the night market road (Post Office end) turn left at the cross roads. Straight on until you reach 'T' junction then turn right. Go straight on out of town for about 4Km's and turn right where sign posted 'Tad Thong Waterfall' for a further 2.8Km's.The 500 hectare Tad Thong Nature Conservation area is easily accessible by Tuk Tuk, Car, Scooter, bicycle (geared preferably) or, for the more enthusiastic, on foot.Tad Thong is just 6km’s from Luang Prabang and offers a unique, paved, approx. 45 minute walk through dense jungle. For years the path has been hidden away from the public but is now open again for you to experience the beauty of the natural jungle and huge trees that once covered much of the land in this part of Asia. There is a Khmu village just off the trail which can be visited and when you have finished the walk you may wish to take a swim in the lake or eat and drink at the Restaurant. The waterfalls are spring fed, as are many of the falls in the area, and will reduce in size to just a trickle by the end of the dry season - but the Tad Thong area is more impressive as a Nature Jungle walk so the waterfalls should be looked at as a bonus and not the main reason for visiting.

“Excellent hidden falls walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

Having read rave reviews about the waterfall, the serenity and the beauty of the falls, we had high expectations, and they were met! We didn't encounter any other visitors on our mini-trek and went just as the morning clouds were clearing. The waterfalls (2) are lovely, and we had a delicious banana shake at the bottom (even though it wasn't on the menu, the staff were so accommodating that they offered it up! I suggest they put it on the menu, because it was the best thing I ate all day). Absolutely recommend this as a fun half day spot! Perfect for getting out of the tourist town center of LP.

“Oasis of peace and tranquility. Great walk with hidden nice surprises”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 24, 2012

This place is not really about the waterfall, nothing special about it. BUT, the walk towards the waterfall and discovering of hidden paths there is simply amazing. Very peaceful, almost no tourists (although reading the other reviews this is likely to changes soon).

Take a mountain bike and ride outside LP towards Kuang Si waterfalls. Look out for a left turn with a sign "waterfall 2.8km". Nice ride there and back. Entry fee 20,000KIP. Beautiful lake. Bar with drinks at the bottom of the waterfall. Get a beer and then start the walk, about 45-60 minutes on paved steps (must have taken months to put em there!). Look out for an uphill path middle of the way which will lead you through the woods into a lovely village.

Great for a quiet break of for family with kids. Great photos. Enjoy.

Many thanks for your review - we are pleased you enjoyed the Nature Conservation area and in particular the walk and visit to the Khmu Village. The actual location of Tad Thong is about 3 Kms past the South bus station (main Highway 13 to Vientiane} and is signposted (right) .

“lovely tranquil place, authentic experience, easy to get to on mountain bike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2012

A short ride from the centre of Luang Prabang is this beautiful waterfall and trail. It is so tranquil with a pretty lake and a lovely walking trail to 2 waterfalls. There is also an inconspicuous path to a small village where the little children are so excited to see you, especially when you show them photos you have taken of them. They think that is hilarious! No need to take any food with you as they have a restaurant where you can sit down and eat as well as cool drinks and beer to buy. Our best day out so far on our travels as it was an authentic experience.

“An absolute must in Luang Prabang!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012

You will not find Tad Thong in the Lonely Planet, as this beautiful place has just opened up for visitors. And no tourist agency will organise tours there (yet). But it is definitely the best trip you can make around Luang Prabang. it is just few kilometres from the city - hire some mountain bikes and sweat a bit uphill, it is absolutely worth it. The hiking on the nicely paved path through the jungle feels like a personal trekking trip as most of the time you are totally alone. The waterfalls are a bonus but the best thing is probably the small hidden village which you can reach in 10 minutes of the paved track. Locals are a bit shy as they do not see many visitors so ask if you want to take photos. However, the children love to see their own photos (and sweets bought in the village) and you are guaranteed to see their genuine smiles. Thanks to the English guy with Austrian/Gypsy roots, the hidden gem of Luang Prabang is there for you.
