Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel
Ranked #8 of 68 Hotels in Luang Prabang
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 3, 2009

The service is what makes almost every hotel in Luang Prabang outstanding. The people are so polite and gentle. The service here is excellent, but it is equally excellent elsewhere.
The Maison is quite tired and almost run-down. Mold/mildew grows in the cracks of its bathrooms, and the linen and towels are quite worn. Bicycles are complimentary for your first 3 hours, but these old bikes are so rusted and in such bad shape, that when we rode them to visit another hotel, the other hotel staff were shocked and laughing at the condition of these bikes, much worse than their brand new ones - and their hotel was less than 2/3 the price of the Maison. The Maison then proceeded to charge us for using the bikes beyond the 3 hours, where most other hotels do not.
The Maison does have a swimming pool, but it is just about the smallest, least-frequently cleaned swimming pool I have ever seen, especially for a hotel. We could not see to the bottom of it, the water was so foggy. Breakfast was decent and cozy. There is wifi in the lobby, but to use their computer you must pay, and there is no internet in the rooms.
Mostly, the Maison just seems to have added a few more doors and locks and a lobby to convert this old mansion into a boutique hotel, and did little more than that. It is charming and cozy and of course the staff is wonderful, but for overall value and quality, it is overpriced in my opinion, compared to other hotels in the $130-150 range I have stayed at.

Stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed it. The first night we stayed in the main part of the hotel but we were not bowled over by the room. The next night we switched to the garden rooms which are slightly more spacious and have a balcony (although the hotel is on quite a busy road so sitting on the balcony is not a peaceful experience). What makes this hotel outstanding is not the building but the people who work here. They are all absolutely delightful and made our stay here a very special one. We arrived quite late on the first evening and ate in the restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. Ashamed to say that we loved it so much we ate in the restaurant most evenings! We loved Luang Prabang and very pleased that we chose this hotel to stay in.

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in early September 2009. The expereince was amazing from the moment we walked though the front door. Check in was attentive with the customary welcome drink, along with the offer of a free dinner in the hotel restaurant. The room was comfortable with a lovely balcony overlooking the pool with an excellent maid service.
The location of the hotel was perfect. Slightly out of the centre but only a few minutes walk to the centre of town and the tasty cafe JoMo which is a must visit.
The pool was nice and queit and although small proved invaluable for an afternoon chill out or a cool down at the end of the day.
The free meal in the hotel was beautiful. The restaurant overlooks the pool and the food was stunning, tasting even better as it was free !!
We both had treatments in the spa which were amazing and although not cheap ($40) well worth it. The only criticism I can find is the quality of the bikes we hired from the hotel. I am being picky here and I would stay at this hotel again and recommend both Luang Prabang and this hotel to anybody going to Laos.

Stay here you won't be disappointed. Lovely, helpful and polite staff who couldn't do enough for you.
The rooms were spotless and well maintained. As someone as written an early turn down service was welcomed as you were never disturbed as you were getting ready to go out.
Breakfast very good and so nice to sit overlooking the pool, a perfect setting. On our last day as we left before breakfast was due to start they opened up the dining room early which we were so grateful for.
Having the pool was one of the best things about this place. There was nothing nicer returning after a hot day after visiting the sights around LP and cooling off. The location is also a bonus. It 's only a short stroll to the night market and the local restaurants. Also good for getting up early if you want to see the Monks and the giving of alms.
It was like staying in a private home so peacful. I highly recommend this place.

A very cute, quirky little boutique hotel. The restaurant looked out onto the swimming pool, which was pleasant. The curries we had for dinner at the restaurant were lovely. The rooms were quite nice, but the reason I have given this 5 starts is because of the staff, they couldn't have been more helpful and were absolutely lovely.

We spent 4 nights here and the hotel was a perfect base for exploring LP - but save time to enjoy the pool and massage treatments. Although located on the main road, or room was very quiet and the hotel's location near town turned out to be welcomed. Walkable everywhere.

Our room was very stylish - located on the second floor with a great balcony for relaxing. The hotel's decor overall was really lovely. We ended most days with a glass of wine poolside. The hotel's pool area, restaurant, and main house became even more beautiful at night. By day the pool was great - not too crowded as most guests are out seeing sights. Breakfast was good and lunch was tasty - stay basic. Dinner was not a highlight, better options in town.

Loved the massages. The treatment rooms are tents built on wooden platforms. Although there was some noise from the street during one of my treatments, overall the tents were excellent and reminded us of being on safari, plus the therapists were extremely professional and talented! Overall a smart choice for anyone staying in LP.

The joy of visiting Luang Prabang during the low season, is that you really feel as if you have the whole town to yourself. The downside, is that the hotel that you choose, may lack a little atmosphere. Maison Souvannaphoum is very good, but because it is a little larger than other hotels, it does need people to make the atmosphere.

Accommodation is comfortable and well planned. The main building is an old colonoial residence with contemporary design features. The garden rooms facing the pool have great balconies for relaxing. Range of TV channels is extensive - great if you need to collapse in your room for a couple of hours. Turndown everynight was at 5pm, which for a resort is a very inconvenient time I think.

Staff here are friendly and polite. They lack confidence to be proactive. ie they don't offer suggestions, but they can asnwer questions accurately and are very smiley.

We borrowed bicycles from the hotel. This was a wonderful way to see the town. The pool is a great treat after a long day in town. The Spa is very nice - associates are technically very good - massage treatements especially good.
