Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel

This hotel is really lovely and the friendly and ever-smiling staff truly make it. Located at the quiet end of the main street in Luang Prabang, it's situated perfectly to enjoy everything the pretty and interesting town has to offer.
The clean, bright rooms are a welcome relief from the standard dull hotel rooms, with locally made silks adorning the walls and beds. The staff are very friendly and talkative and will do anything to make your stay a pleasant one.
Pool is clean and well-maintained and the restaurant is fantastic.
Only downpoint would be that internet use isn't free, though there is wi-fi throughout the complex.

The Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel is a great place to stay. The hotel has a sweet charm about it. The grounds are are lovely and the rooms are well appointed, okay the bathroom is a little bit unconventional, but all in all a great stay.

We spent a delightful four nights here. I have never before felt the need to write a review of a hotel, but our experience was so much more positive than some of the reviews here that I cannot contain myself.

The staff were kind and thoughtful. The Lao food (didn't try the western food) was OUTSTANDING and definitely better than any other restaurant in town. A couple of reviewers have said the food is pricey - I'm not sure how cheap they would want the best restaurant in town to be, but at about US$5 for a main dish I don't really understand the complaint. And as for the reviewer who felt the breakfasts were too small, I can only assume that their visit predated the all-you-can eat buffet, which offered delicious hot/cold lao/western dishes including cooked while you watch omlettes.

Our room was fabulous - but perhaps not typical. We booked one of the four rooms in the old colonial "Maison" rather than a newer room in the purpose built hotel block. The disadvantage was that we had no balcony, but we did have masses of space including a beautifully appointed sitting area with sofa and chairs.

The hotel found out from our travel agent that it was my wife's birthday during our stay. Completely unsolicited, a chocolate cake complete with candles was delivered to our room. How could we fail to love a hotel that can be that thoughtful?

We only had one "difficult" moment and that was upon arrival when we were told that smoking in the room was not permitted, despite our having informed the hotel ahead of time that this was important to us. And, bizarrely, we were told their recommended alternative was for us to go into the restaurant to smoke (yes, the restaurant!). But after a little confusion involving an explanation that it was due to the recent installation of smoke detectors for our own safety (then how can you still put incense burners in the rooms? we asked - ah, good point they said) followed by the explanation that it was because there was no ashtray in the room (can you provide one? we asked -yes of course they said) they then changed their minds and all was well, leaving us entirely happy if somewhat bemused at the whole incident.

I recommend the hotel without hesitation to anyone seeking a smaller, quieter alternative to the bigger hotels in town. This is a hotel for independent travelers not tour groups. It tries to gently absorb you into Lao culture rather than trying to recreate the facilities and (lack of) ambience of an international hotel chain.

The highest compliment I can pay this place is that from there we moved on to the Amansara hotel in Siem Reap Cambodia. Though the latter is better, as one would expect at the price, our days at the Maison remain as very fond memories not eclipsed by the luxury of what followed. We did however hear that Aman Resorts will be opening a hotel of their own in Luang Prabang next year, and that I guess will outshine all competition, though at a price.

We spend four night at this hotel from 11 to 15 August.

The hotel is generally quite nice, but definitely not worth almost USD 200 per night.

First of all, the hotel contacted us in advance to know about our arrival time and to ask for our passport details, but, once we got there, the room was not ready and they haven't registered the details of my girlfriend's passport, so I wonder what was the point of the request, since it didn't save us time nor made sure we had a room on arrival.

The restautant is in a nice setting, but the food we had the one time we decided to have luch there the food was actually quite low quality, so, considering how overpriced the hotel restaurant is, we never had food there anymore.

The rooms are styilish, although I have to agree with most of the comments about the weird bathrooms. We also had quite a number of ants sharing the bathroom with us. We used insecticide to get rid of them, but the "corpses" remaind for a couple of days, which tells a lot about how accurate the cleaning is.

We did not use the SPA as it seemed not too smart to spend USD 50 on treatments that you can get anywhere in town for less than a fifth of the price.

The hotel is a ten minutes walk from the Center of town, which is ok, but the 3Nagas seemed to be a much better option.

Loved this hotel. We did get an excellent deal on the price with trailfinders so we might have a better opinion than those paying full whack.

The rooms was lovely with a nice bathroom and a nice balcony area.
The pool area is lovely, not a huge pool but very nice. The staff were all excellent and the location very very good.

The spa is fantastic. Best i have been too and very good value for money.

But food, drink and laundry are hugely overpriced. PLEASE CHANGE THIS. It doesn't spoil the hotel but it is a bit silly as all you do is go acoss to the shop opposite and stock up on beer, snack etc for a sixth of the price at the hotel.

As Laos was the place I was most looking forward to, this hotel was a little bit of a let down. The hotel itself looks very charming and has a lot of personality but for the price, I got a very small room, comfortable enough I guess but nothing like I would expect. The pool is small and very enclosed so no sun in the afternoon. Prices for everything was crazy high at the hotel as well, in no line whatsoever with the outside prices. I do travel a lot and know prices for high rated hotels but they are always somewhere in line in the country they are in. No nice extras such as fruit in the room or anything like that. Yes I did feel a little ripped off, however, I very much enjoyed the country and their people. Would I stay again? Yes, if they half their prices, for what I paid I should have gotten a lot more.

Location is great tho, right on the one and only main street, only a few mintutes walk to the night market, and you can get a tuk tuk right outside that will take you anywhere you want to go. Just haggle like mad, since this is a very expensive hotel the drivers will try to overcharge. You will be better off walking down the street and getting a tuk tuk there so they dont know where you are staying.

LP is a lovely city, with lots to offer, the stay will be great. But just know what you will get for the price at MS.
