Hotel 3 Nagas Luang Prabang MGallery by Sofitel

Reviewed June 14, 2006

The 2 rooms that we were given were both downstairs in the wooden building and we were kept awake by peole walking across the floor above us for 2 of the 3 days that we stayed there. The rooms are not sufficiently soundproofed with the interior walls being made from thin plasterboard. Neither of the airconditioners worked properly and the 'private terraces' were used by members of the staff to make their own phonecalls, the bars of soap are so small you have to ask for more or buy your own and the beds a simple dunlopillo matress on a few planks. Overall service was poor, descending to non-existent when we had a12 power cut and it would be much better if they spent less time playing games on the computer and more attending to their opaying guests. We were told that they couldn't make us a hot drink because of the power cut, despite them having a gas cooker! The supposedly, freshly cooked to order, hot breakfast was anything but and consisted of a tub of yoghurt, a few pieces of tired fruit, lukewarm lipton tea, an undercooked fried egg and one piece of incinerated bacon! They call it a boutique hotel but a much fairer description would be an indifferent guest house. The final straw was beeing asked to pay double the normal taxi fare as we had occupied 2 seperate rooms, needless to say we walked outside and found a local taxi driver who took us to the airport for a third of the price. There are much better deals available in Luang Prabang some less than 200 metres away.

Dear rtwo,

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is very important for us to know your opinion so we can improve our service.

We are sorry to see that we didn't met your expectations. We apologize for the noise of your neighbors and even more for the staff attitude.

Since your stay, we renovated the hotel once and this year we will renovate it again. Each time a refurbishment is a good occasion to train staff and improve the management methods. Be sure that this will not happen again.

We hope to see you again in Luang Prabang so you can see changes and give us your opinion.

Best regards,

Pablo Barruti

Just returned from 5 days at 3 Nagas and Luang Prabang. Upon arrival from Bangkok on Bangkok Airways (pleasant flight), we could not find the hotel's car service so we found our own way (not difficult, $5). We were surprised the cold reception from the front desk staff (more about that later). The hotel was full so we had to split our stay in two rooms, the executive suite in the new riverside wing ($180) and room #2 in the main wing ($90). The suite was large, on the second floor with a private outside sitting area. It faced the river. But the room was dark and the bathroom abutted one of the hotel's two restaurants, the one that served Lao food. As a result, you could smell food in the bathroom and hear all of the talking in the kitchen. Thankfully, you could not hear or smell the kitchen from the bedroom area. We much preferred room #2 than the executive suite; though smaller, the bedroom and bathroom was better laid out and there was a cozy outdoor sitting area. It was on the first floor so we could hear the footsteps of the guests in the room above us. That did not bother us as much as the sounds and smells from the restaurant.

You can walk or ride a bike to all tourist sites in Luang Prabang. The monks do walk the town's main street at 630 am every morning to gather food, and that is a sight to see and experience. Be respectful of this religious tradition and don't buy food for the monks from the street vendors. We heard of awful ripoff stories, and the monks don't want people to make money from this tradition.

3 Nagas is located a half-block away from the Villa Santi which seemed nice but larger. The rooms at 3 Nagas, however, are larger, newer and have more style. 3 Nagas calls itself a boutique hotel, and it is that but...we experienced unhelpful and sometimes surly service from the front desk staff and unapologetic responses from management. For example, since the hotel has no concierge, we assumed the front desk staff could help us with tour recommendations, advice about tuk tuk (taxi) prices and call around for massages. Not a chance. They refused to call spas, claimed they didn't know prices for the tuk tuks, and tried to recommend their friends' tuk tuk/guide services. We were able to find our own way relying on the Lonely Planet guide and the advice of Derek from White Elephant Adventures, but it would have saved us time and money if the hotel had been more helpful. We were shocked by this lack of service, because we found all other contact with Lao people to be quite the opposite, kind, warm, considerate and helpful. Thankfully, the waiters in the 3 Nanas Restaurant (the one where the excellent breakfast is served and that serves Lao food) more than made up for the front desk staff by making us feel welcome and part of their family.

3 Nagas seemed to be the better place to stay in the town. Everyone has nice things to say about the Pansea/Le Residence, but it is 10 minutes outside of town on dusty roads. You really don't want to walk to town, especially at night, and town is where the monks walk, the shops and restaurants are located and the night market is held. The other high-end hotel (Angsana)is closer in town but again not in town.

Sights to see: river ride on Mekong anywhere, Kuang Xi waterfall (splurge and hire a car instead of open air tuk tuk because the road is very very dusty...definitely don't bike), cross the Mekong and hike to the abandoned monastery, go up to Pousi hill for the view, and, of course, the monks and their Wats all around town. Take time and speak to monks who want to speak english. The highlight of the trip was a raft/kayak ride on the Nam Khan River with White Elephant Adventure tours [----------]. Upon our arrivat to the city, Derek, co-owner with his wife, gave us a brief orientation of Luang Prabang and Laos that helped us plan our visit.

Food: Yes, the 3 Nagas has wonderful food. Our full American-style breakfasts were superb and the Lao food was excellent. Expensive, though, by Luang Prabang standards. 3 Nagas also runs two other restaurants, and we also tried the good French bitro called Three Elephants. Other meals we enjoyed at small family run restauants on the main street. Geared for tourists, yes, but still very authentic Lao food.

Other observations: Luang Prabang is a rural town. Yes, it is growing but things aren't changing that quickly. There is a lot of unpaved roads so it is very, very dusty. And there are a lot of crowing chickens and noisy scooters/tuk tuks...bring ear plugs if you're sensitite to noise at night. Shopping: lots of silk scarves/runners and needlepoint. Lots of the same stuff, at stores, the night market, everywhere. A couple of stores, run by by farangs, are promoting very expensive Lao-woven products, 3-4 times more expensive than other similar products. They are beautiful but you decide if the price difference is justified. Finally, for us, three and maybe four days would have been enough for Luang Prabang. There's only one main street, and soon you'll think you're seeing the same stuff everyone.

All in all, we were glad to have gone when we did. It feels like the town is on the verge of a lot of tourist-related development. Such development may spoil the unspoiled and innocent nature of the Lao people and their town.

Stayed in the excellently run 3 Nagas hotel in July 2005. The service was second to none and the breakfast scrumptious. The room was very comfortable and luxurious and had a private balcony with two loungers and a small table with two more chairs. The air-con. was very effective, essential in Louang Prabang during the searing heat of July. Love to go back.

We booked the executive suite on the second floor in the building across from the main part of the hotel. It was a very large room with a nice size balcony that overlooked a small power station, the backyard of the hotel and some stores across the street. You could not see the river. We were very disappointed with the hotel, given the price for Laos. ($165 per night). Although we had a small fridge and bathrobes, it was really lacking in other amenities, even down to the miniscule soaps in the bathroom. But mainly the problem for us was that in this particular room, the smell of grease from the restaurant was overwhelming and made us nauseous (although we thought the restaurant was outstanding). So if you feel you must stay at this hotel for some reason, select the second floor of the main part.

Dear AmFromDC,

Thank you for sharing your impressions about your stay.

We are sorry to know that we didn't met you expectations and we understand your point.

Since you stayed with us, we made a lot of changes. First in the amenities, including soap. Second, we refurbished the hotel once and we will renovate it also this year. Be sure that the smell problem is one of our priorities.

We hope to see you again in Luang Prabang so you can give us your opinion on changes done.

The review below summarized it very well. We were surprised that such a nice hotel could exist in the middle of the Laotian jungle. The "only" thing we'd recommend is trying to get a room on the second floor. The ceiling above us was kind of thin - fortunately, however, our upstairs neighbors were fairly quiet...but you never know.

We spent five nights at Les 3 Nagas in October of 2005 and found it to be a great place to stay. The monks walk past the the front door each morning at 6:20 seeking alms. The staff is kind. The rooms are fun (excellent rennovation of Laotion buildings). The location is fantastic -- close to the temples, restaurants and guide shops. The new building, across the street, has a back yard overlooking the river, creating a sense of spaciousness in the heart of the city. You can relax in a chair next to the lotus pool. You may want to avoid hotels that are too far out of town or boxed into a tight spaces. Luang Prabang is best experieinced by walking. The food is healthy and tastes good. You will not regret staying at Les 3 Nagas.

Stayed 2 nights in late August -- first time in this hotel but about 15th time in Luang Prabang, one of my favorite places in Asia. The 3 Nagas is a delightful addition to the "downtown" guesthouse scene. I followed another reviewer's recommendation and took an upstairs room - very nice size, nice verandah, air conditioning, fan, and hot water all worked. We looked at the rooms in the building across the street for future reference and would definitely stay over there next time, with a room at the back overlooking the Nam Khan River and mountains (these rooms are not yet on the hotel's web site). Food in both restaurants is absolutely wonderful! Western food on the main hotel side, Lao food in yet a third building across the street.
Definitely recommended.
