Owner description: Displays of the opulence of pre-Communist Laos.

Talking about the Royal Palace, I am rather talking about the whole site, especially the beautiful gardens with its views up Phousi and the wonderful temple like building that houses the 'prabang', situated in the night market corner.
At the moment - until February 16, 2014 - there is an interesting exhibition in the back of the museum facing the Mekong. The exhibition shows a lot of photos and a few buddha statues all concerning 'cultural preservation projects in Laos'. It is free! (in contrast to the museum)
Standing in front of the building, walk around to the left.
Also have a look at the last king's cars and carriages.

We really found this museum more basic than we expected- The displays were well presented but many spread out over a large area. many historical items from recent kings but not a great deal to offer!

This museum gives an interesting glimpse of royal life. The collection is well presented and the temple is beautiful. Make sure you do your reading about the royal family and their fate before you see the museum, as there is no context or explanations provided at the site.

It is actually quite sad to see the home of the last King and Queen of Laos before they 'disappeared'. Some beautiful artefacts from temples and shrines, gifts from other countries, ceremonial swords. A pleasant hour.
