Our tour guide made this worth while. He really brought the history to life. If we had went alone I would have just been a little unimpresed.
The garden was nice.

There are no great wonders on display at the Royal Palace. A dodgy fresco, some faded furniture like your Gran's from the 60's and a couple of Lincoln Continentals in the garage. All a bit naff on their own but when taken in context of the time and circumstances during which the royal family lived like this, you get a real idea of the juxtoposition of the ruling classes and the rest of the country.

Luang Prabang is obviously on a smaller scale to most Asian cities and the Royal Palace Museum is no different. Beautiful to look at and interesting given that it was only built last century and many items from the 50s and 60s. Loved the display cases of gifts from around the world. Don't forget to walk along to the end of the verandah and see the small buddha.

Just loved the place and the garden. Definately, absolutely more interesting then the National museum in Vientiane. Exhibits the riches and lives of past Royality.

It is the one thing you’ll visit & get to hear the Laos history, which is a sad one be warned, yet very moving. We had a guide with us & it made the whole experience worth it, because when you see the museum (a plain colonial building) & what’s exposed as the gifts, the books, the pictures & some furniture, it’s not impressive at all. But when you hear the story & the understand the Laos culture while walking and seeing things, when you get to understand the story behind the beautiful mosaics, then you really get into it. So get a tour guide before getting there to make it more worthwhile.
