There are two different locations for the public library in Luang Prabang. Was lucky enough to visit both and speak with volunteers, program coordinators and many others. This review is of the library with the book boat and which houses the Lao-American reading center - just opposite Wat Mai and the night market road. Very impressed with the dedication of local volunteers and their support of literacy, education and getting books deep into rural communities. There is a book boat, run by Chanta, which accepts donations of books, pens, crayons and education materials. The boat takes monthly trips up the Mekhong river to celebrate reading with rural communities, often reaching 35 or more villages.
Both local libraries offer English language conversation practice with native speakers. In attendance during conversation hour at the Lao-American reading center are novice monks from wats all around Luang Prabang.
The other library - aka @Mylibrary & part of The Language Project - offers classes on computer and multi-media programs, including photography.
Long Live Literacy at Local Laos Libraries!
