The Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre was a great learning experience on the making of the silk scarves, tablecloths, and other pieces of clothing and accessories.

Our group spent 2 days learning craft here, including batik, weaving, dyeing, village crafts and basket weaving. Lunch was served each day which was delicious. The staff were wonderful, helpful and patient, with great personalities. This organisation is fair trade and assists locals to learn skills and gain an income. The weaving centre is very interesting. The shop is well stocked with a variety of fair trade textiles. The grounds contained lovely gardens and landscaping.

I visited this local craft shop and bought 2 shirts while watching a master craftsperson at work. the shirts have washed well and were exceptionally well priced for the superb silk.

You’ve got to spend some time understanding the history, culture and background of the crafts and clothing that the people used to use/make before mass production kicked in. The tour is interesting and at 25 minutes about right. The coffee is good, but I wondered whether our delayed start of tour hadn’t been engineered to create a bit of cafe income. The items on sale are art as much as scarfs, fabrics etc and as such are expensive, there are other ways to buy original crafts from villages. Across the street and a short walk in the direction of town is the local market. It’s one of the better ones we’ve been too and if you’re not familiar with the tradition Asia/Laos market, go take a walk. Rats, Monkeys, fish, veg, clothes, you name it, they’re selling/eating it.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour. It takes place every 30 minutes, so you must have arrived shortly after a tour started. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the coffee while you waited.
The prices of our textiles reflect our company mission, which upholds the fair trade values. Specifically ensuring that the artisans receive fair pay, health coverage, educational programs, leave, and additional benefits. They also have a steady source of income which is important in making weaving a viable source of employment. Our materials are all locally sourced and we go through a rigorous quality control process that ensures the highest value in our materials and textiles. On average our master weavers and Village Weaver partners receive 50% of the retail price for the products that we create.
Thank you for pointing other travelers in the direction of Phousi Market. It is wonderful for people to see an authentic local Lao market.
I hope that you enjoy the rest of your time in Luang Prabang and you are always welcome to come back and visit us.

Warmly,
Hilary and the Ock Pop Tok team

We took three half day classes - natural dyes, batik and bamboo weaving - and the whole experience was so worthwhile in many ways! For the natural dyes, we did the whole process, from picking annatto fruit to making three tie-dye beautiful pieces. Batik was half a day with the last Hmong woman who teaches this. We used a small charcoal fire to keep beeswax liquid to apply patterns. And bamboo weaving sounds simple ... but it's not! All were satisfying to learn and made us appreciate the craftsmanship. The guides and teachers are enthusiastic and eager to share. Plus the center is beautiful and right overlooking the Mekong.

I could spend my time just enjoying the garden, but the great food at the cafe and the chance to watch the weavers at work makes it an extra special place to visit. Weaving is such a high profile part of the culture of Luang Prabang that seeing the artisans in action really rounds out the experience. The chance to do your own hands-on workshops is fantastic.

Penny,

Thank you for your kind review. You are certainly correct, textiles and weaving is such an integral part of Laos culture and it is a shame to miss the opportunity to learn about it when you're here. We are so grateful that you took the time to visit us and that you enjoyed all aspects of what we have to offer!

We hope to host you again soon.
All the best,

I experienced the dying class with girlfriends last June but came again this past week with visiting friends to take the tour. It is fascinating to learn about the silkworms, weaving, and dying with natural plant dyes.
The tour is free and informative and the Living Crafts Center is on the river banks - peaceful and lovely. You can have lunch there, too.
There is a free shuttle from Ock Pop Tok in town during the day.

Take their free tuk tuk out to the Center to see the weaving, have some tea overlooking the river and shop for the most beautiful textiles to take home! We can’t wait to return and sign up for a weaving workshop. We stumbled upon this shop and what a pleasant surprise!
