This is the best thing to do in Luang Prabang if you are an English speaker. It's your chance to get to know the people of Luang Prabang, and do a good deed at the same time. Lao people who want to learn English come in on a voluntary, drop-in basis between the hours of 9 - 11 a.m. and 5 - 7 p.m. English speaking tourists also go on a drop-in basis. Somehow, it just seems to work. New tourists show up every day through word of mouth - we heard from other tourists and now we're passing it on. We liked it so much we kept going every day. The people who come are mostly students - some want to be English teachers, some Engineers, some are monks, some want to work in tourism or just think English will help them to succeed. You learn a lot about their lives and may develop a new friend in a foreign country. We were so impressed by their enthusiasm - it's such a pleasure to work with people who are eager to learn and appreciate what you can teach them.

This is such a great thing to do when you're in Luang Prabang. As others have said, you can drop in from 9-11am and 5-7pm to help practice English. Most of my 'students' were between the ages of 17-21. They are SO eager and really value the time learning from foreigners. I learned so much about the Lao youth through my conversations with the 'students'.

The books are also great - I purchased three sets and took them with me on my way to Phonsevan, Laos. I stopped at three Hmong villages with my driver and dropped them off. The teachers were very appreciative and it was great seeing the kids looking through the books.

The Big Brother Mouse staff are doing a fantastic thing to help the people of Laos. I wish that I had sponsored a book club but didn't have the time to do so.

If you can plan little ahead consider sponsoring a "book party". My kids (10 and 13) raised enough money in their public school here in Canada to sponsor three "book parties". We had good support via email from Sasha at BBM and coordinated with him for our visit in November, 2011. Once in LP we joined the staff and headed into the mountains for one of the "parties". My kids and I got the chance to see a small genuine Laos school (about 35 students, 1 teacher) and were completely included in all of the activities. The BBM staff were very professional and friendly and we were lucky to have Khamla along that day. BBM followed up later with a review of the other two parties that the money raised went towards. For more info have a look at their excellent website. All in all a very worthwhile experience for adults and kids alike!

Luang Prabang is such a beautiful place there are countless places to visit but few are as more satisfying as time spent at Big Brother Mouse whether it is just browsing through the books that they publish and distribute to remote village schools or actively participating by volunteering a few hours of time to sit and chat with some of the many eager young Lao people who are trying to improve their English skills by talking with fluent speakers. Held twice daily between 9am -11am and 5 pm - 7pm the meetings are lively and informal. If you’ve had no previous teaching experience it doesn’t seem to make much difference and the rewards to both sides are tremendous and will open your eyes to what is surely one of the nicest places in the world today. A ‘must go/do thing’ when in Luang Prabang or anywhere near.

There are so many worthy causes and charities around Luang Prabang but our two hours at Big Brother Mouse was a highlight of our trip.

We expected to be reading to younger children but worked with four kids ages 18-19 who were studying english at the local school. While the process of teaching english was satisfying, the relationship building with the kids and the joy they show in learning was priceless.

When you arrive, there is no guarantee that students will be waiting so you need to be patient as they wander in during the two hour period. There are many other ways to help this organization with their mission by buying and distributing books.

A very worthwhile two hours!
