“Management is Listening”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Currently staying at Villa Meuang Lao and could not be more pleased. My room, booked thru Agoda, is great. Very big bed, four windows that open, a/c that I never need to or want to turn on, great ceiling fan, very responsive Internet that seems always on, great access to the Mekong River (50 M), Morning Market is a one minute walk, the big night market less than a five minute walk, always very quiet, coffee and fruit always available, complete room service avail daily if you just leave your key at the desk, and lots of hot water if you let it run a couple minutes. Management is super helpful, and seems to be always available and smiling.

I list all positives, which is the way it really is, as it appears management is listening to the scattered negatives occasionally posted previously.

Room Tip: I prefer the upstairs rooms.

Almost all accommodation providers at Luang Prabang comprise of private houses that are converted into guest houses. This one is no exception. It's situated off the main street and a stone throw away from the market (selling perishable produce in the daytime & selling souvenir items in the evening). What the other reviews said is all so true about rubbish being thrown away after the market. Well, we can't have it all and that something has to give, right? It's also a stone throw away from the Mekong River, where there are a handful of restaurants. This is where I find the downside of this villa, where it doesn't have a restaurant facility. The room is not cleaned unless you leave the key with the front office. The owner himself speaks English, but just. As a result of that, social interaction with the owner is kept to a minimum. The room is fine. The bed is superb (very firm bed & not for Westerner's liking), wifi is great but what's lacking is the service. Whenever lodging that I have stayed so far, water is being provided daily but here, none is provided & not even coffee or tea making facilities. The bathroom is definitely below par. The basin somehow is not firmly linked to the waste pipe. So, whenever it's being used, the bathroom will be flooded. The format of the bathroom here is akin to the one found in China. When u take a shower, the bathroom will be wait all over. Cockroach and other crawly insects are to be found in the room & my guide kindly requested the owner to give it a good insect spray. Otherwise, I woke up with an army of baby spiders up my arms literally. The room also comprised of a fan & air-con. It's passable but not really that cold. At the moment, there's a renovation happening next door and it's months away before seeing completion. And so, during the daytime, you can hear the grinding and clanking sound of metals. At least the workers have a decency to not carrying on working in the evening. On the first floor, there's verandah where seats and chairs are placed for guests to mingle or enjoy the warm weather outside. However, that's not helping when guests would still stay outside until after 10 pm. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable stay but it seems to be rough on the edges and it could have done so much better.

Great location - very close to both river and night markets while still managing a quiet location with a secluded feel. Manager was very friendly and helpful, they were happy to look after our bags while we stayed in another town for a few days. Air conditioner worked really well and wifi was strong in the rooms. Good facilities, clean, spacious rooms. For this price, would definitely stay here again.

Villa Meuang Lao has many charms and few challenges. Comfortable room with strong air conditioning, ceiling fan, and fairly nice bed. It does not have a safe, phone, and hair dryer only upon request, and no breakfast option. You cannot really open the windows; one side is on the corridor balcony, and the other side opens onto the neighbors. It was very peaceful and quiet as long as you did not linger in bed since they are renovating the adjacent house. It was abolutely silent at night. The villa is located on a charming residential street. It is close to the Morning Market- which can at times spread a bit of rubbish down the street- and close to the Evening Market. The staff is very kind but challenged with English. Unfortunately, the housekeeping has a special conception of cleanliness: linen and towels are fine, but the floor is not done daily, and the shower stall definitively needs a more thorough attention.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the ground floor! Sleep will be great as soon as next door construction will be over.

We had 5 nights at Villa Meuang in late June & found the Guest House to be in a good location, clean & comfortable and good value for money
It is well located close to the river, restaurants, the night & very interesting morning market. The staff were very friendly & helpful & it is an easy walk to most sights in the city. It is located in a quiet lane that is away from the busier (if there is such a thing in LP) streets.
Recommend hiring of a bike to get around the city at your pace (USD3 for the day) as it's very flat with little traffic
We loved Luang Prabang & would definitely recommend & stay again at Villa Meuang

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs at the rear are quieter

Firstly, the location is excellent. Right on your doorstep you have all the main sights of Luang Prabang.
The accommodation is good, pretty building on a quiet lane with traditional wooden detailing.
Now the bad...
The air con was ineffective, the room was an uncomfortable temperature for the three nights of our stay. The shower was without exception stone cold. The bed was hard (as is the theme in most guesthouses),The wifi was next to useless...
For nearly $30 a night there is better value to be found elsewhere.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very for your good comments for our villa ! and we will improve whatever you suggested for coming future ! Our villa is family run, and we hope we will learn from your idea to develop our service and more,...

But, as we had experiences :
1. Air condition - we found quite a few guests that did not know how to operate the remote control to have a good air as you wish. there are 2 systems; one is for cold weather that you need more heat and one for for warm weather that you need more cold. So, if you pressed bottom for cold weather then it will be warm.
2. many guests said to us that they had a full hot showered, maybe you just did not adjust it the right position.

anyway, thank you so much for your advise and we will give you more infos about our villa when you com next time.

many thanks,
Khamsouk

i stayed here recently for 5 nights, had booked room for first night in nearby Mekong Holiday Villa but did not want to stay further nights there. Discovered the Meuang Villa down a lovely peaceful leafy lane, and it was a delight to stay there. lovely spacious, clean and well appointed rooms and a general relaxing feel to the guesthouse. Very well located to everything in the town. Good value.
