“Great experience”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

The ceremony will be great experience if you stay away in the crowds. We stayed in our little street near Phousi Guesthouse and there were no tourists at all, only locals. Nobody took photos. The monks came about 7AM.
If you want to be part of this ceremony, don´t take photos, please be respectful, sit down and take your shoes off, don´t yell or laugh loud and when you want to leave, wait until all the monks have passed by.

If you go to the main area of ceremony, be prepared to meet lots of tourists and lots of cameras.

“A Lao must”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

As we have been doing this in a number of Asian countries the LP have commercialised this completely. You walk in the street at 6.00 and are ordered to sit down, hold a basket of cookies and a basket of sticky rice and pay KIP 20,000. Nice to notice that at the end of each line of donators there is a little boy with a plastic bag the begs the monks for food. Sort of recycling system

“Alms giving ceremony - moving”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

The moment is magical. You can see tens of monks together in one after the other receiving alms from the locals. Impressive both the ceremony and the colors.

There is a downside to this as on the main streets there are a lot of tourists making photos with flashes or standing in the way of the monks.

As we went to the temple entry on little streets we could observe more the ceremony itself than the crowd of tourists. We set at the entry of one of the houses and we observed in silence.

“Not to be Missed”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Wak up early by 6am and wait on the main road to view the hundreds of monks walking barefoot with bowl to collect alms. You can buy basket of alms from ladies selling for locals as well as tourist. Most locals bring own mat to kneel. If you buy alms basket from a local vendor, she will provide the mat. Great photo opportunity.
