We stayed one night in Ban Pakham and one in Ban Phoneheung, and were not nearly as impressed with the Ban Phoneheung branch.

While the location seems quite nice, just off the main road and right in the middle of the path of the tak bat, there was what sounded like a karaoke bar very close by, which wailed until after midnight. Our room was right off the street and the door apparently quite thin, so we heard every bit of foot and vehicular traffic that passed.

When we arrived, the staff seemed VERY confused as to why we were there, and while afterwards were very helpful and courteous, could be decribed as more confused than welcoming. Despite the fact that i had booked well in advance, all they could offer me was a room with twin beds for my husband and I. The safety deposit boxes were at the front desk, and the one assigned to our room was in use, so we used another room's. This felt a bit odd.

Clerical mix-ups aside, the room was very clean and well decorated, and the staff helpful once we were assigned a room. Unlike the ban pakham, this branch did not offer the Laos breakfast option, which we found disappointing.

They seem to know, however, that this branch is not as good because the price is lower, and in fact we saw ads putting the property up for sale.

i would recommend Ancient Luang Prabang hotel, but not the Ban Phoneheung branch.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Monkey room, which had twin beds that could not be pushed together. it did have a l...

This nice wooden building shares the same name with another hotel close to the night market and they should not be confused.
It offers 12 rooms in a silent central street – perfect to see the monks in the early morning.
The room is not big, but elegant and comfortable, clean, with a nice balcony.
Free wi-fi.
The only problem we had was breakfast: you have to choose only one dish from a menu (bagel or pancake or fruit salad with yogurt...). It was so frustrating to have such a small choice, so we had to involve our tour guide to convince the staff of the hotel to give us at least orange juice, bread and jam in addition.
Apart from this problem, we had a perfect stay here and would come back again.

We have a couple of teething problems like the airport transfer and the existence of 2 different Ancient Hotels but this could have been a user error (ie, me) rather than the hotel. Sometimes the electricity, hot water and TV didn't work. But don't go to Laos if you expect these things to be perfect.

Once you arrive at the hotel however, you are made to feel like a member of the family.

The staff are genuinely affectionate and warm. The breakfast is generous and very good. I had pancakes every morning, my eldest son had the American breakfast. Could not have been better.

The Ancient is one of the best places to stay in Luang Prabang. I have been there on 3 occasions and have stayed there each time. I cannot say this about other cities where I am less loyal.

This is the other Ancient Luang Prabang at Phonheuang. We stayed here for 3 nights, free airport transfer. This hotel is quite new and is way up the other side of town near all the temples. The room was amazing with a jacuzzi in our room and also a separate shower in the same room. We had a balcony and view over the monks receiving alms every morning. What was ideal here was that there were not many tourists who made it up to this end of the town in the early morning so it was lovely and quiet. There were many local people giving alms so it made it very special. We were still really close to restaurants and it only took 5-10 minutes to walk down to the base of Mt Phousi and the night markets. I would really recommend this place if you wanted to get away from tourists!

Very nice hotel in a quiet street one block away from one the most beautiful temples in Luang Prabang (and they are so many) and a short an pleasant fifteen minutes walk from the night market.
Also close is the Mekong river with plenty of good restaurants alongside.
Although the hotel is a traditional Laotian wooden building all the rooms have a veranda over the street and all the proper up to date amenities for a very comfortable stay.
They also provide a free transfer shuttle bus from and to the airport.
