There are plenty of open air restaurants along the Mekong River where you can watch, on a day when Mother Nature cooperates, the glorious sunset. But the sunset is just the beginning. The colors deepen and the palette changes, fading to black, with almost no lights at all visible across the river. Electricity has not yet reached the other side of the river, reminding you that despite all the creature comforts you are enjoying, you have left the 1st world behind.

Waking up in the morning, from our balcony at the Mekong Hotel, we watch as the river comes to life again. While the hotel does charge a premium compared to the 5 or 6 others nearby I checked out (only to find no river view rooms available so booking ahead may be good advice which we failed to heed), if you’re only passing this way perhaps just once, it was worth the price of admission to sit on the balcony of the Luang Prabang River Lodge 2 and contemplate the mystique of the Mekong.

CONS: At the periphery of the tourist section of town.

PROS: Helpful staff; free WiFi ensuite.
