Villa Nagara

Reviewed April 16, 2013

We were very happily surprised with the Villa Nagara and would return any time. We were received by a young, smiling staff who always knew who we were and did their best to help in any way.
Breakfast is served by the veranda across the road overlooking the Nam Khan river: a peaceful, lush and very relaxing setting. Regardless of what we ordered, we were more or less served the same, but it was tasteful and freshly cooked. It is a very nice touch that the hotel offers free coffee and tea at the same veranda all through the day. Our room had no real view, but it doesn't really matter, and it seems typical for many of the places in the city. The location is great, in the middle of the historical town and close to all major sights. Very good restaurants are close by, so I can only recommend the Villa for future visits to Luang Prabang.

We spent three nights at the Villa Nagara, a boutique hotel in a restored two-story house facing the Nam Khan river. We booked an upper-level suite and were given the amethyst room - each of the seven rooms is beautifully decorated in a different jewel tone. Our room was very spacious and featured a small balcony with a river view. The bathroom was also much more spacious than it appeared in the photos and the water pressure in the shower was spectacular. The minibar was stocked with bottled water, Coke and cans of BeerLao - all free of charge.

To respect the customs of the owners – and to protect the wood floors – guests are asked to take off their shoes and store them in a cabinet off the lobby. The hotel supposedly has free wifi, but I couldn’t get it to work and was told that Apple products often have connectivity problems there, but a desktop computer is set up in the lobby for guests to use.

Breakfast, included in our room rate, was served every morning on the riverside terrace opposite the hotel. Both the eggs and the pancakes came out great! Best of all, breakfast was served late enough to enjoy after watching the morning alms procession and taking a hike up to Phu Si to watch the sunrise over the Mekong. We would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Splurge for one of the upper level suites!

The location was great but Luang Prabang is small enough that doesn't really matter. The room was very nice, large, clean and comfortable with an in room safe. I had no view but it was very quiet. I thought the breakfasts were quite good (especially the little chafing dish used to keep the coffee warm) and the veranda was great. I had beautiful mornings every day I was there but I could see it might be a problem in less than ideal weather. I had a bit of trouble initially with the WiFi but once I got connected it worked fine for me (I used a tablet). The reception staff may not have been always the most attentive but on the two occasions I did ask for help the reception staff provided all the help I needed. Very surprisingly, they did not seem to book or have information about tours at the hotel. I don't know enough about other places to stay in Luang Prabang to comment on the value relative to other options but I would stay there again.

Absolutely the best place I stayed during my travel through Southeast Asia.
First, the villa is located in the quiet part of the old town near the Nam Ou river, but restaurants, temples, evening market are very nearby.
Secondly, every room is beautifully decorated with a different color scheme and nice hardwood floors, comfortable beds. Complimentary with the room you get 2 Lao beer, 2 cokes and 4 bottles of water every day. You can make coffee or tea in your room, but you can also drink it gratis in the restaurant. Free Wifi (and mine worked perfectly - room 5). You may use the bicycles also free of charge.
And last but not least the staff was very friendly and helpful. They always inquired how my day was and gave tips on what to see or do.
The only minus would be that you don't have any view from a standard room, just a wall of bamboo in front of the windows. But this alo means that the room is very quiet, no outside noise at all.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a view, you have to book one of the suites. The other rooms are at the back...

Rooms clean and comfortable.Nice location near the riverfront.
However the hotel claims there is internet in the room, we weren't able to connect our tablet to the WIFI.Wifi signal very, very poor.Staff at the reception unfriendly and not motivated to help. They were more interested in keeping up with their Facebook friends.
Breakfast good and it's nice to have breakfast at the riverside.Think there are better options to stay in Luang Prabang.

We were very disappointed with this hotel. We thought about spending a few extra dollars and stay here because of all the good reviews, but you can definitely get better deals at other hotels.
The staff is nice and the rooms are clean and tidy. However, the breakfast was awful: they don't have tables inside so they serve it on the sidewalk by the river (one would think it's pretty and romantic, true, but there's also a very cold morning breeze that will have you eat cold breakfast with a jacket on), don't know what they'd do on a rainy day, and more importantly that's not American breakfast (giving you a checklist of things you would like them to bring, at their own pace?). The Internet was very, I repeat, very dodgy and we were unable to hold a connection for more than 3 minutes with any device other than my laptop (say phone or tablet). We booked a king size bed but got 2 twins put together instead. The breaks on the free bikes barely worked. I can probably list a few other things that don't spring to mind right now, but you get the idea. They have potential, but they need to work hard to get there with all the other options you have around.

Small boutique hotel with nicely decorated rooms. They have small restaurant across the street with nice breakfast and excellent dishes for lunch and dinner.

Great location as it is one block away from the main street where there are plenty of restaurants.

Room Tip: Book a Jr. Suite. Those rooms are very nice
