“Fabulous!”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

My husband and I stayed here as part of our tour of SEA and we were blown away with the amazing rooms and perfect service. Breakfast is served on the verandah of the French colonial style main building and it is worth getting up for. The fresh fruit plate, pineapple juice and porridge, not to mention the delicious eggs benedict were to die for. The service is friendly and professional from the front desk to the dining room. The rooms set in French colonial villas are AMAZING!! I would happily live in our room forever! Free wifi and an extremely comfortable bed are the icing on the cake. Bikes are available at the hotel and it is lovely to go for a cycle through the town. Dinner is expensive here and so we chose to eat elsewhere. It is a minor thing though as we love to get out and about in the evening anyway. Do not miss the alms giving ceremony. Another place for anyone's bucket list!

We stayed for 3 nights in July.It is a new hotel but so well done, it has the charm and creaks of floors of an older, understated hotel We were upgraded the first two nights to Explorer but still happy when they made the move for us to Pioneer.
The walk to town, though bikes were available, was short and interesting. Did use the hotel tuktuk other times as well. The food was wonderful. Pricy but the best curry I have had in years. Breakfast was fine with lots of choices. The staff was attentive and well spoken. Lovely pool for the end of a long hot day in town. We have no complaints at all and would highly recommend a stay here.

We have stayed in Luang Say Residence for 3 days and we have very much appreciated the service , the comfort and the atmosphere at Luang Say residence. Allthough very newly built , the residence has allready the touch of ancient colonial times and you feel very much away form everything . Allthough not exacly in the center of Luang Prabang you can easily reach evreything either by their shuttle of bu complimentary bikes, the best way to enjoy this wonderful little town. The restaurant features international and local food with this very french touch of high quality cuisine. The rooms ans suites are very comfortable and equipped with everything one would need. The surroundings and the swimming pool are inviting you for a nice pause . And whenever needed you will get advice and attention for the wonderful staff. We highly recommend this property !

Absolutely fantastic boutique hotel in beautiful Laos. Faultless in every sense; beautiful property and amazing service. Cannot recommend it highly enough, and am already planning a return visit in the near future.

I have just completed a five-day stay at the Luang Say Residence, motivated in part by the price, by the style, by the level of comfort, AND by the photos and (some of the) reviews on TripAdvisor. It was an extremely pleasant stay, and I would recommend this property warmly to others.

The Luang Say is not exactly a hotel in any organic sense. It is more like a French colonial theme park, realized with great seriousness, taste, and remarkable attention to detail. It bears little relation to its surroundings, but then it provides a European level of comfort in the middle of a very obscure, though heavily touristed, backwater: Luang Prabang, though once an imperial capital and still the provincial capital, with beautiful temples, vegetation, charming people, and a glorious geographical setting, is a very small town in the middle of nowhere. So any hotel that caters to fussy international visitors, such as myself, is bound to stand out a bit. Once you adjust to the concept, you have to admit that its realization is thoroughly successful down to very small and touching details.

The hotel is intimate but on a grand scale, and it aims to impress, so it does not have quite the magic or the personal charm of a small boutique property, like the Sojourn Boutique Villas at Siem Reap, but it offers a higher level of comfort and services, and the restaurant is particularly good. It is not in the strip of the old town, but few of the good hotels are located there, and you don’t need to live right in the center of things, which is busy with tourists and merchants. You can walk from one end of the old town to the other in 15 minutes, so it’s not inconvenient simply to be dropped off there (it costs $1.25 to get there in a tuk tuk) and then make your own way.

My room was very comfortable, and spotlessly clean, with beautiful wooden floors that tempt you to walk barefoot on them in Lao fashion (though slippers are provided). The air conditioning, which I needed in July, was quite effective, and the beds, pillows, and bed linen were wonderful. The staff, as noted by other reviewers, are very sweet: I would also add that they are excellently trained and they have beautiful manners. The quality of their English varies, but it is good by local standards, and they do their best. My only complaint is that the internet was slow and a bit erratic, but it ultimately did not get in my way.

The breakfast, which is included in the price of the room, is a remarkable indulgence. You come down from your room, say, at 10 am. You sit at a wonderful broad wooden table on a wide veranda overlooking a splendid garden. Smiling handsome young waiters bring you a plate of fresh chilled pineapple, half a mango, expertly sliced, and dragonfruit, with excellent homemade yoghurt. You have your choice of various fresh fruit juices and coffee or tea. You are brought a large basket with croissants, pain au chocolat, brioches, and toast, all warm, worthy of any hotel in Paris, accompanied by butter and jam. Plus, you are given your choice of three menus, each with variations. The eggs benedict are so unusually good that I can now understand why other reviewers singled them out for special praise. But the Lao soup with fried garlic and a toasted rice cake and condiments is also superb (and you can alternate it with congee).

Dinner in the hotel is excellent as well, and the Lao dishes are about $10 each.

We stayed at Luang Say Residence for 5 nights (LSR) after our 2 day cruise down the Mekong from Houeisay. The cruise is organised by the same company. The cruise is one of the best way to see Northern Laos and the life on the river. The staff were courteous and friendly and food was plentiful and excellent variety of Laotian dishes. Entering Luang Phrabang by boat was magical and our stay at LSR was a perfect extension of this cruise. The layout of the main building was simple and beautiful, a classic French colonial style. We had a suite in the main build that looked over the whole property with a large balcony. Very spacious , 100 m2, large room with a great view. We would love to have the same architect design an identical house for us in Asia some time in the near future. The front manager Rassamy was always attentive and helpful as was the rest of her staff. Overall experience with the food was very good and we loved the breakfast. Still remember the warm baskets of pain au chocolate and other varieties of bread that greeted us every morning and thought the presentation and the selections of food on the a la carte menus were well balanced between western food and Laotian selections.
The hotel is about 4 kilometers out of the center of town , but shuttles are available and a series of bikes are there for you to use. We biked into town a few days which took less then ten minutes to get to and found it most pleasant and relaxing. A great way to see the sights.
The pool was nicely designed and great for cooling off in the hot afternoons. We also loved that the hotel offered wonderful pastries, cakes and small snacks during the late afternoon during tea time. Our five year old loved sampling the treats.
One slightly negative point that is beyond the control of the hotel management is that there is a lot of slash and burn farming of the hillsides in Laos. Apart from this being a major environmental issue, it is also so pervasive that many afternoons, the sky was grey with ashes and smoke. The smell was noticiable while sitting outside. This if anything is an issue the Laotian government should address if they want to take tourism seriously.
Luang Say is a wonderful place to which we will certainly return to upon our next visit. The whole place just exudes a wonderful warm colonial atmosphere.
We travelled with 5 yr old daughter as part of 8 month world trip. Thai, Laotian in laws stayed with us in hotel as well.

Room Tip: Rooms are grouped by 4 in separate buildings. We had a suite in the main building, which felt like s...

We had the most pleasurable stay at Luang Say Residence. Everyone we met and everything about our stay was wonderful. Beautiful and spacious suite, stunning ground/pool, delicious breakfast, excellent turn down service, graceful and friendly staff (Rose, Ae, Siew, Da and chef just to mention a few). Nothing was too much trouble. We were very well looked after.
Although the hotel isnt in the Old Town area, dont let this put you off. The hotel provides regular free shuttle to the centre of town and return pick up. Or you can use the bicycles provided, it's a 10 min ride and there are local shops and restaurants along the way.
There really is nothing not to like about this amazing place.
