“Great location, kindest staff!”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

As all the other reviews have said, this is a great place to stay in Luang Prabang. I stayed in Chitdara 2 Guesthouse for 4 nights in the end of August. The guesthouse is in a very convenient and beautiful location. By just walking for 5 or so minutes you will get to the main road of the town - night market, cafes, restaurants. I would recommend renting bicycles in summer though just because it is much faster and it was no fun to walk around under blazing sun.

The river is right across from the guesthouse and you can have your breakfast by the river if not raining. Breakfast was simple but nice with strong coffee, baguette and some fruits.

Staff are very nice and speak good English. They got us welcome drinks and detailed map of the town as soon as we arrived. I had many questions and they were very willing to help beyond the regular hotel staff duties! The owner of the place has live in France for 30 years or so and I am sure his French is very fluent too. (Though I can't speak the language so I wouldn't know for sure) He took us for the giving ceremony in the morning and explained to us about the temples, religion and history of Laos, which was greatly appreciated.

Room was clean, well-maintained and has everything we needed for the trip - small TV, refrigerator, comfortable and clean beds. Cleaning service was very nice too. They actually have upgraded our garden-view room to a river-view room, which was really nice. I highly recommend river-view room if available.

I have only good things to say about the guesthouse and am looking forward to traveling in Laos again!

As you walk around Luang Prabang, you will notice that there are many guesthouses with a charming exterior that look immaculately clean. I won't say that Villa Chitdara 2 is the best guesthouse in town, but it is certainly a great place to stay. The location is hard to beat - it is on the Mekong side of town within short walking distance of everything and has second-floor rooms that overlook the river (request one of these). Breakfast is served on a little patio across the street directly above the river. The room and bathroom were well furnished and always clean. One time, much to my embarrassment, I tracked some dirt through the guesthouse. I went back a few minutes later to apologize and inform Vong, the owner, but it was already all cleaned up.

As others have noted, Vong is extremely nice, very helpful and will assist you with whatever you need. You should certainly take him up on his offer to watch the alms-giving at 6am. He also organized a sunset cruise for us.

Breakfast is good but pretty standard by SE Asia standards - you get a drink, fruit, fresh baguette, and eggs (including omelette). The WiFi can be pretty unreliable as well.

I can only agree with (most of) the other reviews about this Guesthouse. We stayed for 5 nights in a room on the 1st floor overlooking the Mekong.

The room was clean & a decent size, as was the bathroom (with a separate shower area, separated by a step and a shower curtain). The staff are friendly, especially the owner (Mr Vong) who also took the time to chat when he was around. Unfortunately we didn't go to see the monks with him as I was feeling a bit low with a cold so decided that I needed to rest in the mornings.

We really enjoyed our breakfasts here. The guesthouse has a private area overlooking the Mekong across the road where they will serve breakfast if you want. This is a great location for a relaxing breakfast. The food was simple but well prepared every morning: fresh fruit, fresh baguette, a choice of eggs, jam & tea/ coffee. We had fried eggs every morning which were consistently well cooked (we've been amazed at the number of hotels that can mess up a fried egg!)

This place isn't cheap but it seems to be a really good price for Luang Prabang which has some really expensive hotels & guesthouses.

The hotel itself is very basic, however, what really counts is the staff. Mr. Vong is a very knowledgeable and helpful person. He allowed us to participate in the Alms offering ceremony, introduced us to Buddhism and their customs and was always willing to explain everything, either in English or in French. Furthermore, when I got very sick on the last day he offered me some medication and lots of support.

The rooms are pretty basic, however, you will everything you need in every of them. I recommend taking upper floor rooms with Mekong view as you will get less noise from the street and a nice view.

The breakfast is something that will be remembered. You go down to the river bank where they have seats prepared and they serve you breakfast there. It's not the best breakfast, but the atmosphere of the place makes it really special.

We were planning to stay 2 days and extended to 3, then 4. Our host Vong was amazingly nice and helped us change our reservation and reorganize the rest of our trip. He and the guesthouse staff were incredibly nice and helpful to us
The villa is nicely located in the city, close to the main monatery, the monks morning procession and the city historic center. Having breakfast while looking at the Mekong river on the eraly morning after following the monks procession was very soothing and refreshing.
We truely enjoyed this place and recommend it to anyone planning a stay in Luang prabang

We were a group of 10 adults so had the Villa Chitdara to ourselves for a week. Our host Vong and his delightful staff couldn't do enough for us. They made us feel completely at home and all our needs and requests were met immediately! The rooms were clean and comfortable, spacious and well serviced every day. Although there were no tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms, these were constantly available to us in the pleasant foyer. We had both air conditioning and ceiling fans to help keep rooms cool. Vong took us out as his guests on a boat for a sunset cruise and provided all the drinks gratis. Breakfast beside the Mekong each morning comprised abundant fresh fruit, delicious crusty french bread and eggs cooked any way you liked!
Vong and his staff were always on hand to assist us with any request and went out of their way to be great hosts. Make sure you get up early at least once during your stay and go with Vong to the 6am offering parade of the monks. You will have a memorable experience and Vong will personally explain the ritual to you. Don't stay here if you want the 5 star luxury and impersonal experience of a resort! Do stay here if you want excellent value for money and a really warm and hospitable experience.

Room Tip: Upstairs front gave an interesting view of the street and river (through the trees)
