After spending a night at a very overrated hostel on the outskirts of town, we searched the night market area for a new guesthouse. We only checked a couple places, but stopped when we found ThanaBoun.
The walk-in rate was a reasonable $17 (a few dollars cheaper than the loud, slightly dirty guesthouse we were at previously). The manager was perhaps a bit gruff but we found him to be very helpful. He showed us a room downstairs and said if we came back at a certain time, he would be able to give us a nicer room upstairs for the same price. He was present, and impressively chipper, at 6AM the morning we checked out.
The room was really lovely. Large bed, among the softest we've had in southeast asia, with a lovely fluffy clean comforter, plus a flatscreen TV with a couple English channels. The bathroom was standard but very clean. Yes, the drain smelled. a lot. However, the drain also smelled in our other guesthouse in luang prabang, in many other guesthouses in laos, thailand, cambodia, and all over China. Just an unfortunate side effect of plumbing in developing countries. closing the bathroom door blocks the smell from the bedroom 100%.
All-in all, a great experience.
