I agree with the positive reviews - good price (USD15) for a very nice and clean room with comfy bed and good aircon, hotel quality really. It is just at the start of the night market, close to everywhere but in a "local" street that has more locals than tourists. You may need earplugs if you want to sleep in.

We moved to the Mekong Moon when we weren't happy with our original choice of hotel in Luang Prabang (based on the Lonely Planet review). The Mekong Moon is clean and very well maintained with a nice open air tiled lobby.

Free wifi and free computer use, A/C, excellent location just south of the Palace, but not on the main street.

We stayed 2 nights in this inn. Our room was the one with balcony on 2nd floor. It was very clean, cozy and charming! The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom has a separate room for shower. There was wi-fi in the room. The service was good and the staffs are friendly. We had a pretty good deal with the price too! It was 120.000kip/night because of low season. Location of this inn is very near to the central and just next to the Mekong River, even though Luang Prabang is quite small and you can tour around the city easily by bike. Takes only 2 mins walk to the night market and the Phousi Hill. We really liked this inn and will definitely go back again!!

We were looking for a cheap room in the center of Luang Prabang and how lucky we were to find this nice little guesthouse that really looks like a hotel actually. The service is pretty good, and it's really clean. The AC works perfectly.

Just a tip, try not to take the room with the balconey cause it starts to be a bit noisy around 7am when all the small shops open.

Mekong Moon Inn.

Literally a one minute walk from the fresh and night market, as well as the Mekong river and centrally located for seeing Luang Prabang's main attractions and restaurants.
With only half a dozen rooms it has an intimate feel. WiFi is unavailable but there are two computers located in the lobby for the use of guests, with a reasonable internet speed.

Tea and coffee is provided and is free if you make it yourself. There is also a cold water dispenser near the front doors and a drinks fridge where if you ask the staff nicely they will happily let you store your drinks. The common areas has a number of tables where you can sit, have a drink and watch the world go by as well as chat to other guests.

The rooms are about average for Laos, that is quite 'cozy' but not tiny and tastefully done. Tiled white floors, dark wood panelled ceilings and a large ensuite bathroom with a hot water shower with seperate toilet with sink. All rooms come with a comfy bed, an airconditioner, Cable TV and a fan. Room number 5 (the room I stayed in) has double doors opening onto the balcony and numerous power points conveniently located. If you are a light sleeper I would suggest asking for a room towards the back of the Guesthouse as the street is rather noisey until around 11:00pm and kicks off again at about 6:30am.

Staff are friendly and helpful though most have limited English and the whole place exudes a friendly atmosphere. A laundry service is available at a very reasonable 10,000kip per kilo of washing and is available 7 days a week.

At the time of my stay (April 2011) the price of a room was 160,000kip ($20)/night and 220,000kip ($27.50)/night over the Lao New Year period, very reasonable for Luang Prabang which is undoubtably one of the most expensive places in Laos due to its World Heritage listing driving up the prices.

The rooms are only cleaned when you leave and for short stays this is fine but I found that a had to ask a couple of times for the rubbish bin in the room to be emptied as it is tiny and tends to fill up a bit quickly but apart from this I had no complaints at all.

Room Tip: If a light sleeper ask for a room at the back.

This is strictly a travelers hotel that offers all these familiar features known to budget travelers such as an alley location, small floor space & cramped toilet, however it is actually quite a comfortable hotel considering its firmly in the budget category. If you can spare the luxury to pay $10 USD or 70,000 KIP for a room with a quaint wooden balcony, it buys you an evening’s worth of conversation in the cool night air near the Mekong River.

Room 5 with the attached balcony had polished wooden floor boards, fan, 2 double beds, 34 cm TV, hot water shower & sit-down toilet. The hotel doesn’t have any Wi-Fi or breakfast but the reception has warm tea & the kids watching the desk don’t look too shady which has got to be worth something. Air con was an extra $5 USD but we werent really interested.

The Mekong Moon is budget in terms of floor space & services so it is unreasonable to expect these things for $10 USD, it is rather cheap, clean & functional, more importantly it is right in the action & within walking distance of the night market, Mekong river, Haw Kham Royal Palace, Phu Si hill, Vat Sen temple, Vat Xieng Toung monastery & Sisavangvong road/Sakkaline road where most of the restaurants & Luang Prabang night life are located. We didnt book beforehand rather we walked in off the street & were pretty satisfied with what we saw & choked at the price in this potentially expensive town.

Like most other hotels, the reception desk also sources bus tickets to most major cities & sites in Laos, daily tours & does laundry next door. Most tickets sold here get free pick-up from the hotel in the mornings where tuk-tuks take you to the bus terminal.

I personally liked this place, its simple, low-key & we spent our evenings sitting on the balcony watching kids play in the street.

I initially thought this was a nice quaint inn in Luang Prabang, On a little soi off one end of the night market, so a good location. My room was on the second floor and had access to the upstairs narrow balcony. On the 5th night there my camera was stolen at night, as I still used it right before I went to sleep. It was gone in the morning when I got up. This was an expensive Nikon camera with an expensive lens - a serious loss.

I do have to say that bc I was feeling ill, I had neglected to lock the doors (one on the inside, one to the balcony.) I suppose it is possible that someone other than the staff figured out how to climb up to the overhanging balcony, came into my room and took my camera, but it is unlikely.

The owner who lives elsewhere took a I don't care attitude and couldn't even be bothered to come and meet me. Unfortunately the police was not much better. The attitude was "it's impossible to come in when you are sleeping" and "why do you suspect a Lao person? Perhaps your friend took it" and to top it all off "You have no evidence you had this camera. Did you declare it when you entered the country?"

If you care about your safety and your valuables, don't stay here. Oh yeah, and the quiet soi? Not so much. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, neighbors bring their stereo outside and blast music all afternoon and all night.
