Having just spent three nights at Amantaka, the hotel is clearly the finest property in the area by far. The local staff is so friendly, so kind and just wonderful. This new hotel has everything to make your visit to the area worhtwhile. The rooms are just beautiful, and the common areas elegant and useable. The only problem is with management which is just not efficient (except for kitchen staff who could not be nicer). You would think that Aman would send more competent people to run a new property. We were not explained our package in full, nor given a proper tour of the property. Otherwise, it is an amazing property, which would make your stay in the area even more magical. I am sure the bugs will be worked out shortly...

The hotel and location are just amazing. While I am sure it will change over time, the town is so peaceful and the people so nice. The hotel is an Aman and live up to its reputation. If your not happy here, nothing will make you happy.

I would suggest the feeding of the monks as a must do while your there.

This is typical Aman resort with great service, sublime luxury, full gym and spa. Opened in Sept 2009 and it centrally located to main town.

Negative is that their meals are expensive and below average - its better to go to outside restaurants like Tamarand. Also major attitude against non guests. I had friends visiting and their security put them through third degree. Also as is Aman standard, no TV or internet in the rooms.

We loved our rooms here, and the facility is incredible. We received an upgrade in advance of our stay, and were treated wonderfully by the staff. Unfortunately, they almost seem to be trying too hard, and it can get a little slow at mealtimes, especially at breakfast. Although we had more than our fair share of small disappointments, it must be said that the managers always made sure that we received free special treats like a complementary sunset cruise, and a dance recital at a special dinner poolside.
The Laotian people were wonderful to us throughout our stay, and the property is perfectly situated. Take the cooking class with the hotel's chef, and travel the local market with him. Take a trip up to see the country homes of the Hmong villagers, too. We also loved the river trip up to the Pak Ou caves in their spectacular Mekong motor yacht. Feel free to email us if you have specific questions about our experiences there.
All in all, great spot, just should have still been charging "soft opening" rates for a while longer.

Amantaka is a gorgeous new addition to the Aman stable of properties. I was welcomed warmly at the airport then upon arrival at the hotel. The hotel is on very large, manicured grounds. The conversion from the old hospital into the suites was extremely impressive. I was upgraded to a Khan Suite and it was one of the largest and most comfortable rooms I have ever stayed in, with a very large private pool. The grounds at night are lit with lantern candles and it provides a lovely oasis of calm that lets you know you are in a special Aman resort. Special mention must be made to the staff. Many are still learning but it's no problem. The charm of the Laotians is something you will not soon forget. I was made to feel very special indeed. Gary, the manager, is very friendly and extremely professional. I was most impressed. Luang Prabang itself is a gorgeous time capsule of old South East Asia and a wonderful experience. The hotel has many activities that can keep you busy if you so choose. The gym is brand new and excellent and the Spa is a serene experience. The only area I felt needed improvement was the food. A little more variety would not go astray. Particularly at dinner the choices were very limited. It cries out for a few more casual options - especially on a hot, balmy night. Amantaka is a great new Aman resort and I recommend it very highly indeed. I was a bit sad to leave - and that surprised me. I would not hesitate to return.

Stayed there during "soft opening" phase and very much enjoyed our stay. We were given a Khan suite which was very beautifully decorated (see pictures). The staff was extremely attentive (at some point we were the only people staying there and we were told that they had ~120 staff...) and the service level was already quite high. Personnel still needed a bit more training but they were clearly trying very hard. Amenities we enjoyed included the pools (big common pool and private pool), very good workout facilities, great breakfast, bicycles to ride around town (best way to experience the surroundings of LP), the Mekong sunset cruise. My wife enjoyed the spa. The babysitter we were given was very nice and we felt comfortable leaving our daughter with her.

I think the Aman style is for staff to engage a lot with guests. I prefer the slightly more reserved approach to service you get at Four Seasons resorts, but that's a matter of personal preference.

We felt that what we received was well worth the introductory rates. I am not sure, however, I would be willing the very high standard rates they are now charging.

We spent 3 nights at Amantaka and I must recommend it to everyone. The hotel was not fully operational, but already sensational. The position is the best, walking distance to every town attraction, the architecture is sensational, the rooms very, very large and the pool really refreshing with those August temperatures. The staff needs some more English practice but everyone is very kind and willing to learn. Don't miss the boat trips. The Mekong river is something you will never forget.
