Owner description: Opened in 2007, TAEC is a museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions about the diverse ethnic groups of Laos. Permanent Exhibitions highlight the Akha, Kmhmu, Tai Lue, and Hmong ethnic minorities. On display now is a special exhibition entitled, "Seeds of Culture: From Living Plants to Handicrafts". This exhibit features the Job's tears (Coix) plant, indigenous to mainland Southeast Asia, to demonstrate the important relationship between humans and nature. On display are unusual artefacts, including a Chin headdress that uses porcupine quills, and magnificent necklaces from 14 different countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Visitors are treated to a visually stunning display allowing them to explore the meaningful role of the environment in the daily lives of rural ethnic communities. The adjacent TAEC Museum Shop features fair trade handicrafts from 12 provinces of Laos supporting over 600 ethnic artisans from all over Laos. TAEC also boasts an extensive family activity centre, ethnobotanical garden, and patio cafe with cold refreshments making the museum a perfect destination for children and adults.

“A Small Gem”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

A well displayed representation of the skills, clothing and craft of many ethnic minorities in the region. Not a large collection, but a selective one. A plus, the delightful cafe.

“Fascinating little place”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We spent a very pleasant hour here, learning more about the Lao people and traditions, and then had a lovely snack in the cafe before purchasing some wonderful souvenirs in the shop. A great addition to LP's attractions.
