Owner description: Opened in 2007, TAEC is a museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions about the diverse ethnic groups of Laos. Permanent Exhibitions highlight the Akha, Kmhmu, Tai Lue, and Hmong ethnic minorities. On display now is a special exhibition entitled, "Seeds of Culture: From Living Plants to Handicrafts". This exhibit features the Job’s tears (Coix) plant, indigenous to mainland Southeast Asia, to demonstrate the important relationship between humans and nature. On display are unusual artefacts, including a Chin headdress that uses porcupine quills, and magnificent necklaces from 14 different countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Visitors are treated to a visually stunning display allowing them to explore the meaningful role of the environment in the daily lives of rural ethnic communities. The adjacent TAEC Museum Shop features fair trade handicrafts from 12 provinces of Laos supporting over 600 ethnic artisans from all over Laos. TAEC also boasts an extensive family activity centre, ethnobotanical garden, and patio cafe with cold refreshments making the museum a perfect destination for children and adults.

Displays are simple but clear with a mixture of visual and written info. The museum is small, but that makes everything worthwhile and leaves you interested.

This is a smaller museum with good information and exhibits about the different minority groups in Laos. They gave the kids an activity sheet, and they seemed to enjoy the museum as well. Good cafe in the back. Well worth a visit.

A visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre in Luang Prabang should be a must for anybody interested in learning about the traditions and lifestyle of the hilltribes of the region.
The museum is well designed, the exhibits are properly displayed and accompanied by informative, descriptive text.
Although it is not a large museum, it is well set and it provides worthy coverage of the lifestyle of hill tribes.
The museum shop offers a good variety of quality handicrafts and books, and the shop and museum staff are keen to provide information to visitors.
I enjoyed visiting the museum and would recommend to include it as part of any visit to Luang Prabang.

...the emphasis seems on the commercial side of things. We had hoped to see more activity on the manufacturing side and get more information than was forthcoming, at least from the places we visited. We weren't there very long, however, and didn't see everything, so maybe we were just unlucky.
